Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum

Description

The Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum is a railroad museum located in Lenox, Massachusetts, United States, that offers historical exhibits. The museum was founded in 1984 as a not-for-profit organization. During the 1980s and 2003-2011 it offered tourist train rides between Lenox and Stockbridge on the Housatonic Railroad right-of-way. In 2016 the museum began tourist train service in North Adams, Massachusetts.Initial train serviceIn 1984 the Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum began operating passenger excursions between Lee and Great Barrington, over tracks owned by the Housatonic Railroad. Due to deteriorating track conditions, passenger operations were suspended in 1989. The excursion trains returned in 2003, based at the restored station in Lenox, with regular schedules to Lee and Stockbridge. Special events are sometimes held in conjunction with railroad operations. In 2011, the Housatonic Railroad announced it would not be renewing its agreement with the Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum which allowed the operation of excursion trains on its tracks. Colin Pease, spokesperson for HRRC, said, "The Housatonic Railroad has determined that the continued operation of the Berkshire Scenic Railway on Housatonic-owned tracks is no longer possible." Pease could not give a reason as to why the relationship suddenly changed, though several unfounded accusations were made towards the volunteer group in the press.

"All-volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of railroad history in the Berkshires. History railway station and museum is open to the public on Saturdays only Memorial Day through Labor Day. For excursion train rides please visit our Hoosac Valley Train Ride located in Adams, MA."

Sorry to have to write this but this was by far the worst trip ever. We drove 2 hours for a hour “scenic - Fall Foliage” train ride and what we saw were people’s back yards, propane tanks and a huge cemetery. The only excitement was watching the crossing guard drive to each cross way to stop traffic as we passed and met a nice couple. We occupied our time chatting as did everyone else on the train. Would never recommend or do again. Very disappointed.
My family of three was pulled out of our spot near the front of the line so that a large tour group could go before us. We were told they wanted to keep the tour group together so they allowed 70 ppl on the train before us even though we had gotten to the station early and were waiting in line for 30 min before the tour group showed up. The tour group spread out in the train and my family and I we'rent able to sit together.
Great train ride. I was there for a convention and a great conversation with train staff. Great historic equipment and a scenic ride.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
#ironmountainironhauling.com We relocated a converted box car from this location to a different line in Canterbury, NH on 11-4-21.
Not a very scenic train ride. Most of trip seeing trash and backyards of old poorly maintained homes. A lot of brush and trees next to track so very poor scenery. Not worth the $20 fee.Visited onWeekendWait time10–30 minReservation recommendedYesPrice for adult entry$16–20
Would be nice if this was available other than only on Saturdays from 10-2. Unable to experience due to this restriction as we were visiting from out of state and didn’t arrive until late Saturday evening after hours. Unfortunately we departed before we were able to experience.
Nice collection of locomotives and railroad cars with most from New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. If you are interested in railroad history, go further away from the station where they have un-renovated cars in different stages of decay. I personally found this part of the collection the most interesting. The main attraction is the rides on the renovated trains across the Berkshires which should be epic fun for the entire family, but we didn't have a chance to do that yet due to Summer 2020 restrictions. Overall, a hidden gem in the Berkshires worth a visit, if you are interested in American railroad history.
Attended for a private event. Amazing views all around, and a ton of history too. Worth a visit!Visited onWeekend
There’s absolutely nothing exciting in this train. My six year old keep calling it boring the entire journey. There are better views when driving in the city. Won’t recommend this to anyone..
We did not get to go inside but the scenery around was beautiful
