Bernadin’s is historic and famous as Winston Salem’s 1815 restaurant! We had a private party of 10 in the original building and room and truly enjoyed such a special evening thanks to the staff and team. Food was excellent and reasonably priced! The appetizers were fantastic, while the bar was fully stocked and everyone liked their drinks. Dinner was perfect with no issues and well portioned meals. Truly a 5 start establishment. The only issue was the lights flickered in the private room.
We had been wanting to go here for years. We had hear great things and we just keep forgetting about it because it’s at the high end of our budget for a celebratory date night. I always forget to make reservations places and actually using OpenTable was awesome. I think they get charged when you make a reservation using it, but I really appreciate it. So easy. The food was great and the outdoor dinning area was nice. The table was quite a bit wobbly but you can’t win them all. For an appetizer we did calamari and it was on point. Would definitely recommend. I got the tuna and my wife for the salmon. Both very delicious. I got a side of asparagus and… it was not that great, nothing about it was special other than very buttery. I would pass on that next time. The service was fine. Nothing that went above and beyond. Didn’t volunteer and recommendations just the specials. Definitely not bad. Just not amazing. But I don’t take of my points for that : Overall this was a really nice date night and I would love to say that we will be back. But it is the very high end of the price range for us and is a very few and far between type place.
The Korean beef starter was nice, however our portion was very rare blue. The lobster special was amazing very nicely stuffed ravioli. The swordfish special was nicely cooked, however, I'm confused why they added hummus to the plate, it didn't add anything to the dish, but instead distracted from it. The ambiance in the outdoor gazebo was lovely, however, a lot of bugs and bug bites came.
We decided on Bernardin's for dinner as this was highly rated around Winston Salem area near our hotel. We called to make a same day reservations but the lady who picked up the phone put us on hold and never came back. We had to call again and the only seats available at the time was for indoor seating. Be mindful that you'll have to walk up the stairs to be seated indoor and restrooms are located in the basement. Once you walk down the stairs to the restrooms, you'll smell a whiff of the typical restroom scent. It wasn't pleasant. We ordered the scallops, duck, and surf & turf MKP which was $55 at the time Scallops were cooked really well. The surf & turf was such a major miss. This could've been done so well but I asked for the beef to be medium but it came out RARE. I cut into it and was quite concerned how rare it was. I sent it back to the kitchen and it was done fine after. However, for "fine dining" and for the price you would expect the quality to be there without sending anything back. The lobster was very tender and done well. The brown sauce underneath the steak, lobster and potato cake was SO SALTY. This was the only thing that brought my review so low because I don't know if this is normal to be cooking so salty and eating it. That made the dish not worth $55 at all. I say pass on the surf & turf because if a chef can't even cook beef correctly and on top season the sauce so salty...it's very suspicious to me. The dessert was sorbet and chocolate mousse cake. Sorbet was way too sweet and the chocolate mousse cake tasted like a brownie. Also one thing to note, I asked for ginger ale and they were out of ginger ale. The guy who looked like the owner came by and he had such an attitude and said "out of ginger ale." I asked what other options do I have and he goes "the usual coke or sprite?" but the way he said it was almost as if he was really irritated at me. Not sure why but maybe a bad day? Overall nice atmosphere but way too expensive for mediocre food.
First let me start off by what a beautiful restaurant. I wanted to give this place 5 stars but couldn't based on a couple things We went on Thursday at 6 pm and it was perfect timing for a romantic dinner setting outside before the rush. We started with the Brussels and crab cake which has a Mexican twist in the traditional crab cake. Both were good but the crab cake was cold. Alec, our fantastic waiter, provided 5 star service from start to finish. He explained the specials well which I ended up electing the Lobster ravioli. The playing of entrees were the best presentation of all Winston Salem! Props to the chef. Even though the food came out very quickly after ordering, the lamb chops and filet were cool, not hot. Goat cheese on the steak is a nice touch and was pleasantly paired with the lobster on top. Lamb chops were great with the rice cake. Lobster ravioli was good but not 'blow your mind" . Finished dinner if with one of the best desserts we have had. The cinnamon bun cake I believe. So good and fresh! want to come back to give this place a second chance as there were so many items on the menu I wanted to try and it has so much potential. Hopefully next time all food will be brought to table fresh!
Wonderful experience! I had emu here and 100% want to have it again... what a great dish! Very limited parking in back. Look for street parking near by. Update: We had a second great experience, but this time we had a few concerns. When we were first seated, we waited 10 minutes after being seated, and it wasn't until we went back to the hostess that she was able to find us a waiter. Throughout our meal, the lights above us were flickering dramatically. When we asked the waiter, he said it'd been doing that since he started working here years ago. The prices on the drink menu are inaccurate. The manager failed to honor the price on the menu and charged us nearly double the printed price.
Was curious as to what awaited me at Bernardin. Net - food better than I expected, and restaurant very good overall, but a click below America’s best. Food: escargot appetizer very unique. More broth-/soup-like than a classic French presentation. Worked well. Emu was delicious - quite tender, excellent sauce, loved the sweet potato puree. Cobbler was disappointing - nearly cracked a tooth a couple times on peach pit fragments. Seriously? C’mon man…no ‘fine dining’ place should be serving up pit fragments! Wines were on point and great examples of their varietals. Large pours = excellent value. Strange that these guys have no specialty cocktail menu though - no doubt a missed revenue opportunity and something I’d have expected in 2003, not 2023. Service was fine, but not distinctive nor on point with a James Beard-like peer. Parking: About 15 spots in their lot, but plenty of nearby street parking
The food was amazing, sitting outside was intimate and everything we were looking for except for the carpenter bees that never left the area around our table. Our waitress was good, not great, but good. She didn't necessarily do anything wrong but wasn't as attentive to our table as she was to some around us. We would absolutely go back and try other entree's.
Fantastic! Just went there for our anniversary. Had a fabulous server named Josh and he was awesome! Very attentive without interrupting constantly like other places. The food was exquisite! We had the Filet Mignon and the Lobster Ravioli. The salad was delicious and we had 2 desserts; blueberry/ peach cobbler and the chocolate mousse cake. Yummers!!
Located in the Zevely House, the oldest house in Winston, Bernardins brings you a fine dining experience in a lovely location for you to enjoy with friends, date, or with family. Their staff is very attentive, friendly, and helpful from the moment you walk in, we had a smile on our faces the entire time we were there. Our server was on point with the recommendations in terms of food and wine. And the food was so delicious, very fresh, loved everything we order and the presentation was very nice. My risotto was honestly the only thing I wasn’t happy about but it didn’t bother me that much because the rest of the food was delightful What did we order? - Fried Calamari, Mustard Sauce/Thai Green Chili Sauce - Crab Cakes, Black Bean/Com/Chorizo/ Cilantro - Atlantic Salmon, Horseradish Crust/Spinach/ Sweet Roasted Garlic/Port Wine Sauce - Sea Scallop, Leeks/Sun Dred Tomato /Asparagus/Mushroom/Risotto/Chipotle Plum Vinaigrette
