Bill Armstrong Stadium

Description

Bill Armstrong Stadium is a 6,500-capacity soccer-specific stadium and velodrome located in Bloomington, Indiana. The stadium is home to the Indiana Hoosiers men's and women's soccer teams. It also hosted the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship in 1988, and is home to the annual Little 500 cycling race, which was featured in the 1979 Oscar-winning movie Breaking Away.HistoryConstruction on the stadium finished in 1981, with the 30th Running of the Little 500 being held on April 25 and the inaugural soccer game on September 13 of the same year. A $2.5 million renovation took place in 2001, bringing a new grass surface, scoreboard and grandstand. The 5,000-seat main stand includes a press facility with room for 50 members of the media. A later phase of the renovation included a 1,500-seat secondary stand on the north side of the field, bringing the stadium to its current capacity of 6,500.NameThis stadium is named for William S. Armstrong, Sr. who was the president of the Indiana University Foundation for many years. He was both an avid supporter of the athletic program at Indiana University and very involved with the Little 500 and its activities each year. He can be seen in the movie Breaking Away as the official starter of the race, saying, "Gentlemen, mount your Roadmaster bicycles."

Beautiful field. Comfortable seating. Sun can be an issue near sundown.
Beautiful place to watch the beautiful game!
Very good collegiate soccer venue, as well as home of the fabled cinder track for the wonderful Little 500 cycling competition. Sightlines here are good for soccer. The Little 500 consists of both men's and women's team events where squads compete for the Borg-Warner Trophy Little 500 edition and other awards. Each team is presented identically-prepared, single-speed bicycles; teams may exchange riders by either handing off the bike while trying to maintain momentum, or by one rider coming to a stop next to his successor in a tag-off format, and the succeeding rider then commences. There are crowds of cheering fans from teams' dormitory floors, student clubs, fraternities, and sororities. The movie Breaking Away, starring Dennis Quaid and Daniel Stern, was centered around the Little 500. The pace car from the Indianapolis 500 is used to lead the field around the track for a pace lap before the race begins. Much like the actual Indy 500, spotters track the laps for each team, as tracking each of the 33 entries can be difficult over the course of the event.
best stadium in the city. 10 - 0 in any other IU place. IU Men's soccer team rules
Nice place. IU is a great team come join us.
They made me switch sides because the tore down the good bleachers instead of fixing them so they could build a luxury box for rich people. The remaining bleachers are further away and at a shallower slope so you end up much further from the action. Love the IU soccer teams though!
Great football soccer stadium.
Awesome venue! Home to the IU men’s and women’s soccer as well as the ever so popular little 500 race. Always an electric environment, the stadium is a very cool facility on IU’s campus. Luckily it’s going to be remodeled this year because it needs it!
Great security and plenty of seating. Wish they had more than one concessions stand though.
Great day for IU Little 500 bike race-Women's
