Binge Eating Disorder Association, Inc., (BEDA) is the national multidisciplinary provider and patient organization focusing on the unmet need for preventing, diagnosing, and treating binge eating disorder. BEDA is committed to facilitating awareness
Binge eating disorder (BED) is the most common eating disorder. BED affects 3X the number of those diagnosed with anorexia and bulimia combined. It is more prevalent than breast cancer, HIV and schizophrenia. Also called compulsive or emotional overeating, BED affects an estimated 3.5% of women and 2% of men.
But the actual number of those affected is likely much higher, as many individuals haven’t been diagnosed and may not even know they have the disorder. Because BED is steeped in shame and secrecy.
Many suffer for years without getting help, labeled failures lacking willpower and stigmatized into silence by well-intentioned but woefully misinformed people who profess to help.
The Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA) was founded to help those who have BED, their friends and family, and those who treat the disorder through awareness, education and advocacy.
BEDA provides individuals who suffer from BED with the recognition and resources they deserve to begin a safe journey toward a healthy recovery. BEDA also serves as a resource for treatment providers to diagnose and treat the disorder.
By establishing strong connections among members and sister organizations, BEDA’s goal is to give everyone access to the tools they need to live with, treat, and, ultimately, prevent the disorder.
