Welcome to Binghamton University's "Law & Society Blog". While there is a history at Binghamton of strong interest in the law as a potential profession, that history is part of a deep tradition of broad inquiry and questioning, and seeking how the threads of seemingly disparate disciplines connect and interact. It is that spirit and tradition that led to the creation of the "Law & Society Blog". Each day, there is a law suit filed, a new law or rule proposed or passed, a court decision reached or appealed that speaks to and impacts each of us. Privacy, civil rights, the environment, economic and property rights, freedom of artistic expression, freedom to embrace the spiritual or the material—each of these and a great many more questions of law are affirmed, abridged, and debated each day—and define how we relate to each other. How each of us understands, perceives and feels about these issues is what this blog is intended to explore. Whether you are pre-law, a double major in biochemistry and French, or passionate about the arts or arbitrage, the hope is you will find a story here that engages you to speak and begin a dialog with the rest of the Binghamton community. The goal is to offer a spirited and civil space where opinions are encouraged and respected. A place to discover both difference and commonality. A place that reflects the breadth of curiosity and passion of the Binghamton community. A place where each of us can learn something from the other and share what we think about law and society.
