Black Canyon Lake (Arizona)

Description

Black Canyon Lake is a lake in Navajo County, Arizona, United States.DescriptionThe lake was built along the Mogollon Rim in 1964 by the Arizona Game and Fish Department to provide water recreation opportunities for the public. Despite being affected by the 2002 Rodeo-Chediski Fire, Black Canyon Lake remains a popular and beautiful spot for picnics, camping and fishing. Because of the fire, the entire area around Black Canyon Lake is open for day use only due to the danger of falling trees. The facilities are maintained by Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest division of the USDA Forest Service.Black Canyon Lake has 78acre, with a maximum depth of 60ft and an average depth of 35ft. Like other Rim lakes, Black Canyon is deep, and historically has been low in nutrients. Because of nutrients from the fire and ash, Black Canyon Lake is now managed as a put-and-grow fishery. The Department stocks fingerlings, sub-catchable and catchable-sized rainbow trout in the spring and early summer, with additional catchables stocked in the fall. Although some trees around the lake are charred, the perimeter of the lake is forested and scenic.

Amazing, beautiful lake. Spectacular setting in the woods . Majestic wild horses, cows. Great place for a hike , lovely leisurely walking trails. Kayaking, paddleboards, fishingbass , catfish and trout
Nice lake! I've been going here since I was a kid. The lake is almost completely full right now. This lake has bass, trout, and bluegill. They have plenty of parking and parking for vehicles towing trailers. The bathrooms aren't the best, but they get the job done. There are wild horses that wander around the lake. Great lake for the family!
Camped nearby and walked to the lake to fish. Beautiful lake, not busy at all. Fish were not biting for us, but still had a great time. Group of wild horses hanging across the lake was fun to watch. Another group joined us in camp a few times. It was an amazing experience! Camping in this area was wonderful, lots of places to boondock. We will definitely be back again!
Bumpy drive to get there, but it was worth it. The scenery was nice. Saw a few wild horses and a lot of cattle. The lake was very muddy looking. Saw a couple of guys fishing but didn't see them catch anything. Didn't have my fishing poles, so I didn't fish myself. It was so peaceful and quiet.
on the day we were there was a small herd of wild horses .it's a small lake but in a very nice valley. it is a quiet peaceful place to drop a line
Beautiful area. As you can see we had some visitors at our campsite.
Came for Memorial weekend and while it was busy, we were able to find a perfect camping spot that was quiet and secluded. The lake was surprisingly not crazy busy and there was lots of room to enjoy yourself or throw out a line. Also saw a herd of wild horses which was awesome!
Great little lake. Easy to get to the lake. You do have about a 5-6 mile dirt road to drive on to the lake. Large mouth bass and rainbow trout are in the lake. The have vault toilets and plenty of parking. There is a little island in the middle. They also have a small dock and a boat ramp. Cows come down and drink from the lake. My only complaint would be the muddy shores.
As others have said, this is a VERY relaxing place. There was hardly anyone there we went on a Sunday afternoon in October, we probably saw about 5 or so people but we almost felt like we were the only ones there. Very quiet, peaceful. The water level was kind of low but it was still very pretty. One section across the water had some beautiful fall foliage. There is a nice walking trail there. As someone said, to get there, you have to go down an unpaved road for about 6 miles. At a few places, it's narrow so you kind of pull over to let someone coming in the opposite direction pass. We saw about 5 wild horses there, one of which was protecting a few others so he kept his eye on us for a bit.
Got to visit the lake late August 2021. Weather was amazing. The lake wasn't too busy even though it was a Saturday. Definitely a good place to take the family. Not sure how good the fishing is but we enjoyed seeing the crayfish. We will be back with our kids.
