Blackwater Draw NHL and Museum

About

Blackwater Draw is both a world-famous archaeological site (a National Historic Landmark) and a museum in two separate locations. Visit us both!

Description

Blackwater Draw is world-famous for its archaeology and its placement in the chronology of early habitation in the New World. Both the archaeological site (a National Historic Landmark) and the museum are open to visitors; see our website for our hours of operation!

**Blackwater Draw is two separate facilities in two separate locations!

"In 1969, the Blackwater Draw Museum was built to house the artifacts collected from the site, as well as to display materials from other collections owned by Eastern New Mexico University. The museum remained in this location until 2016, when plans put in place to move the museum to the campus of Eastern New Mexico University were realized. In May of 2017, the new museum location opened in Lea Hall, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Blackwater Draw. In our new location we are at the heart of campus and the heart of Portales, making us a much more accessible resource for local schools and families. We are looking forward to another 40 years and more of community engagement and discovery."

The Museum is kind of old and simple, however you must take into consideration that in an archaeological field, Clovis is considered as the birthplace of ancient humanity with artifacts that date as much as 12.000 years back. It is one of Americas most important archaeological sites due to the historic importance.
Small museum. We were the only patrons when we visited. Many small exhibits and most interactive. More could be on the Black Water Draw. But, they had apparently moved the museum fairly recently. Also, there were many exhibits under development. The, I believe, museum director whose office is there was enthusiastic to answer questions, and she was very knowledgeable and helpful. Signage within the building that directs one to the museum could be more obvious and at all entrances. We failed to make the first turn and wandered a bit before finding the museum.
This place has moved to in town at the university but is really small. Just a room of very little actual real artifacts and some reading materials. You are charged a nominal fee which is sad still though since most places allow you to just donate to see a little room of stuff.
Largest collection of Clovis points I have ever seen. Textile and baskets well represented. Some nice fossilized bison skulls. All nicely displayed.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$1–5
