Bob Howard’s Auto Service and Nostalgic Candy Store is an institution in New Hyde Park for many years. Ronnie the owner is always kind and helpful. The candy and toy store inside really has to be seen to be believed. It has the look and feel of an early 1950’s candy store. All the products are well stocked and it will make you feel like you walked into a Time Machine. Disney could not have done it any better than Bob Howard’s. Family and child friendly. Very highly recommended.
Came for the candy shop. I drive past it often but decided to stop it today and I’m glad I did. This idiosyncratic candy shop has been around for decades. Ronnie, the owner of the auto repair and candy shop, gave me a brief introduction of their history. It was initially a gas station owned by his in-laws, until they renovated the office into a general store. It was the only one that offered food and drink, as well as a grand collection of smokes. When gas stations in the area began following suit, his wife Eileen decided to convert the store into a “nostalgic candy shop”. But don’t worry- all the candy and chocolate bars are reproductions from their respective manufacturers. Eventually they took out the gas station for extra parking space. The candy shop also stocks nostalgic toys and colorforms, lunch boxes and collectibles, but the most interesting things were a popcorn machine and a refrigerated Coca-Cola unit the couple had restored; they’re in working condition too, not just for display! I never knew the animals on Animal Crackers packaging used to be behind bars. Or that a Skybar, which was Ronnie’s favorite growing up, had 4 flavors within 1 bar. If you’ve got a car to service, they do everything except for body work. They’re very transparent about prices and waits won’t feel long with this candy shop next door. Don’t drive by like I did for months, come check it out!
What a wonderful & nostalgic store! I spoke with the owners Eileen & Ronnie, to help me put together a gift basket to deliver to my nephew at the local hospital. They were so lovely & helpful, and made the most awesome basket that would fulfill every child’s dreams. I’m certain it will bring a smile to his face. I’m so grateful to them! I only wish the store was closer to me so that I could visit often & reminisce.
Been taking my senior client once a month to the candy store to reminisce on the candy she grew up having as a kid. The price is quite reasonable the selection is amazing. They even have toys from back in the day games. If you want to reminisce on your childhood joys, come here
Staff friendly and entertaining. Amazed at the items from my past were still available. Was able to share some things from my childhood with my son.
Wow. Forget about the candy for a second and go here just for how nice these people are. This is how you run a business and appreciate every customer !
This people r very honet,genuine, not greedy, well professional, particular and best follow up.that is why they win community award every year.i get my all car done here and they r reasonable. They don't suggest anything which not needed.
I lived in this neighborhood since i was a kid. Even when i was just buying Candy afterschool Eileen and Ronny were always so kind to anyone who stepped through the door. Years later I am coming here for my car and I have to say the service with the mechanics is just as amazing! They are honest and fast to fix your car, I feel most comfortable coming here- especially because my knowledge on cars is terrible lol. I am hoping their business thrives for my future kids to experience such great service both the candy and car repairs!
Talk about a trip down memory lane..been passing by this place forever finally when back inside and had flashback on so many old candy and toys...it a great feeling and a place worth going to find the past we left behind a chance to be a kid again...
Awesome place brings back memories and your inner child. The staff is awesome and super friendly. Highly recommend.
