WHAT IS DHA?
Dihydroxyacetone or DHA, also known as glycerone, is a simple carbohydrate. It is typically derived from sugar beets and sugar cane. This skin browning effect is non-toxic, and similar to the Maillard reaction. DHA reacts chemically with the amino acids in the skin, which are part of the protein containing keratin layer on the skin surface. Various amino acids react differently to DHA, producing different tones of coloration from yellow to brown. The resulting pigments are called melanoidans. These are similar in coloration to melanin, the natural substance in the deeper skin layers which brown or “tan”, from exposure to UV rays. HOW TO PREP FOR YOUR TAN FOR MAXIMUM RESULTS
The most important pre-tan step is to exfoliate the skin 24 hours prior to your session. Dead skin cells can cause an uneven tan, uneven fading, and prevent absorption of the DHA solution causing an unnatural look. If you need to shower on the day of your spray tan, it should be done at least four hours prior to your spray tanning session. Use warm water only to rinse your body off since many commonly used soaps, conditioners and body washes can leave a residue on the skin. This residue can act as a barrier to the sunless tanning solution.� If you plan to shave, do so before your tanning session. Shaving can take off a layer of skin which can lighten your tan faster.
DAY OF YOUR TANNING SESSION
For best results, no lotions, makeup, deodorant, perfume or any other products should be used after the final shower. These products can, and more than likely will, create a barrier for the sunless tanning solution.
Have your hair pulled up off of your face and neck.
Wear dark, loose fitting clothing to the session. Tight clothing will rub on the skin and could affect the overall outcome of the tan. Natural bronzers from the solution may rub off on to your clothing, but should come out of your clothing when washed, but is not guaranteed. While being sprayed, wear what you feel comfortable in. Keep in mind if you will be wearing something strapless you will want to wear something strapless. Disposable tops and bottoms are available.�

AFTER CARE
Allow 9-12 hours for your tan to rest before showering. Avoid sweating or contact with water-this could result in lines or an uneven tan.
For your first shower, rinse in warm water until the water runs clear. Use your hands only - avoid using loofas and harsh wash cloths. Pat dry only - do not rub. Moisturize 1-2 times daily to guard your tan from rubbing off. Avoid using harsh soaps, bar soaps or anything containing exfoliants until you are prepping for your next tanning session. Avoid swimming in chlorinated pools, hot tubs and hot baths.
WHEN SHOULD I TAN AND HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?
�Tanning sessions should be booked for 1-3 days before your event. Manicures, pedicures, facials, massages should all be done prior to tanning. Hair appointments are best avoided during the time the tan is "resting". (Avoid contact with water.)
On average, your spray tan will last 5-10 days depending on how diligently you follow the aftercare instructions.
CAN I SPRAY TAN WHILE PREGNANT OR NURSING?
Yes! DHA only penetrates the outermost layers of the skin, is FDA approved and has been used as a cosmetic ingredient since the 1960’s. When tanning while nursing, it is recommend to wear a bra with nursing pads. (Disposables are available.) While nursing the baby will get tan on their face/head/body when held close with skin-to-skin contact directly after a spray tan. Please take caution and wear a long sleeved shirt, as well as use a blanket or towel as a barrier during this time.� If you are pregnant or nursing, please consult your physician regarding your individual concerns.
