This is an excellent museum to learn about the cultural and geological history of Sandpoint, Bonner County, and the northernmost tip of the Idaho panhandle. Admission is super cheap at $4 for adults so you’ll find no less expensive entertainment anywhere. We’ve become somewhat connoisseurs of local museums and this one is among the best we’ve seen. Even though the space is small, the exhibits are well designed, topically arranged, and easy to read and understand. The collections are pretty extensive as well. I especially appreciate how well they handled some socially & historically challenging parts of human behavior during the time periods covered. Instead of sanitizing and whitewashing how people treated one another, this museum acknowledged our past without shame, blame, or condemnation—it was limited to the statements of events. Can’t say enough good things about this place. Everyone needs to check this out.
The displays are curated with an eye for beauty. You'll love how everything is set up and it's a treat for the eyes. The docents are friendly and ready to answer any questions. So much information about the area and really cool tidbits.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitPrice for adult entry$6–10
One of many local historical museums we visited in the northern Washington-Idaho area. This is a very well-kept museum and a great look at the native peoples, early settlers, pioneers, and local citizens of note. The outdoor displays are a fun, eclectic look at artifacts from the area over the last 2 centuries. Well worth the time to visit.
It would have been nice to have been able to walk in. We arrived 15 minutes prior to closing to be greeted by a closed sign. The sign on the caboose said no climbing on the caboose but nothing about walking up the stairs. An employee invited us to basically go away.
Had such a pleasant visit to the Bonner County Historical Museum. While it is not a big place no more than a couple of hours needed to see it all it has excellent exhibits on geology, first peoples, explorers, the influences of the logging, railroad and mining industries as well as lots of information on local families, etc. The welcoming and knowledgeable staff went out of their way to make sure we had all our questions answered and it was enjoyable to peruse the giftshop for books, etc. with an emphasis on local history and culture.

We learn so much about our city from this cute little museum!
the ancient items with photos were very interesting, especially the items that were found during some recent construction Price for entry: $4.00
Very interesting displays covering the history and development of the area. The museum has numerous artifacts and a special display on exhibit now on the role of women in settling northern Idaho. The arboretum is also on site and features various garden settings such as native perennials, subalpine plants, and had stands of native conifers. I very much enjoyed the gardens and it is obvious that the volunteers spend a lot of time caring for the plants.
Small but full of fun stuff. I wish the train was open!
