Myspace-Boylesk:
Boylesk is the art of removing the costume to create a heightened illusion of masculine sexuality as entertainment. Although it has its roots in female burlesque and vaudeville and boylesk venues often booked acts combining drag and comedy it as has a unique identity outside of these theatrical artforms. This page is an attempt to provide male burlesque a place to share photos and history. Here is a brief history... The first american male burlesque star was Henry Dixey who starred in 'Adonis' at the Bijou theater in New York for a then unprecedented 500 performances in 1884. Eugene Sandow became a nude male superstar in the 1890s. He exhibited himself with a figleaf as a physical culturalist . In 1912 an "afternoon of a faun" premieres in paris. the audience is shocked by Nijinsky’s missing dance belt. The begining of overground male burlesque was born in the paris music halls like the lido in the 1930s, but the male dancers were in duos doing apache and flamenco acts as accessories to the women. The formative era of boylesk was from 1965 to 1985. In 1968 the Eros I became the first licensed american all nude all male burlesque theater and opened its show "BOYLESK" on 8th ave which ran for almost three decades. Within months a whole string of all male burlesque theaters opened in times square and in most major cities and some advantageously remote locations like the sugar shack. boylesk has evolved in many directions and hybrids since then and is still strutting his stuff.
