Description

POLICE DEPARTMENT HISTORY
The First Police ordinance authorizing the office of a marshal in the Borough of Bradley Beach was passed on April 19, 1893. The first marshal, Charles A. Bennett was appointed that same month and assigned to work six months of day shifts and six months of night shifts.

The first sworn Chief of Police was Charles J. Poland who served from 1935 to 1950. The second Chief of Police was Robert E. Farry from 1950 to 1951, at which time he was elected as a borough commissioner. The third Chief of Police was Harvey T. Gaunt who was appointed chief in 1951 and served in that capacity until his retirement on December 31, 1971. The fourth Chief of Police was Eugene T. Myles who was appointed in 1972 and served until 1988. Alfred E. Trimble was the next chief serving from 1988 to 1992. Then Robert DeNardo from 1992 through 2006. The current Chief of Police is Leonard A. Guida who was appointed in January 2007.

The operation of the police department has changed dramatically through the years, from foot patrols and "on the beat cop" to the use of bicycle patrols and marked police vehicles. The Bradley Beach Police Department currently has seven marked police vehicles and five unmarked vehicles outfitted with the latest equipment such as mobile computer terminals, Automated License Plate Readers, video camera recorders, speed radar units and life saving CPR/defibrillator packs.

As the Borough has grown, so has the police department. The department currently has eighteen full time officers. The structure of the department has grown as well, with officers assigned to the detective bureau, bicycle patrol, traffic safety, community services and the D.A.R.E. Program.

Within the department there are four full-time police dispatchers and a secretary. School crossing guards, police matrons and special officers complement the department and provide additional security to our children during school hours and our beachfront population during the summer.

The Bradley Beach Police Department has come a long way since 1893 and under the leadership of Chief Leonard A. Guida will continue to meet the needs of the residents and protect and serve the community.

I was threaten by officer SRGt Ricarrdi or whatever a few years back around 11pm because of a lady making a false police complaint. He threaten me if I return back to my residence, he will lock me up for trespassing on private property. He even had a police cruiser to ensure I don't return back to my home along with my boyfriend because his mother Sharon West made false non paperwork complaints. Two days prior to this evening, I was physically remove off my property dude to another false complaint made by my boyfriend mother of physical abuse. There wasn't any sign or physical abuse on her but I was physically along with my boyfriend remove from our home to live on the street. I was even told live in my car. Lol.. The police failed to remove the Sharon West from the house because she is a woman.. Worst Experience of my life. Horrible police and horrible Sharon West.
Love this police department!! I had worked in town for 13+ years and the Police Department was always awesome and hands on in the community. Years later I had the pleasure of having a 16yr business relationship with the Department and they were always very professional and great to work with. Over the years I had the opportunity to really get to know the officers and they are all dedicated and hard working. I do have a few favorites, Captain Zulla is absolute asset to the Department and Anthony Murrary. I will always be greatful for working with Ret. Lt. Neil Scully, L. Siciliano, T. Volante and The great Chief Robert DeNardo.
Thank you for notifying Point Pleasant P.D. about my daughters lost wallet. We just came home from a cancer benefit at the Headliner in Belmar and a officer from Point Pleasant P.D came to our door to tell us a good samaritan found and brought her wallet to the Bradley Beach Police!
Giving this police deparment a 2 star review. The reason for this review is to explain how i was dissatisfied by a traffic stop that was done to me by this police dept last year. Now while i was dissatisfied with the way the officers treated the stop this does not reflect on my view of the entire dept nor does it reflect in my view on all law enforcement members i have a high ammount of respect for the police in the longterm and i appreciate their service to the country. Anyways last year i was driving in Bradley Beach NJ - i was driving a 2007 Hyundai Accent that i had just purchased. Suddenly i see a police officer behind me with his lights on i realized i was getting pulled over. The officer came up to my window i had both hands on the steering wheel and the keys were out of the ignition and the lights were on in my car the officer then came up to my window he informed me that he was with the Bradley Beach Police and that he needed to see my Drivers L registration and proof of insurance .... before i handed him any i asked him for the reason of the stop he told me the reason for the stop was because my back Licnese plate was not visible and it wasnt mounted on the back of my car ...... I explained to him that i just got the car two days ago and the mounting area for the back plate was damaged and that was the reason for the plate not being on. Also i was upset because i had the plate mounted to my back window in the back and it fell the plate was in the trunk anyways and he saw that. The officer proceded to ask me for my papers ..... i reached into my wallet and gave him my Drivers L .... then reached into my glove box and handed him my registration ... then i forgot that i didnt have a insurance card on me i explained to the officer that i didnt have my insurance card available because AllState insurance didnt send me the card in the mail yet. At this point the officer got more upset he told me that i should not be driving around with no insurance and i acknowledged that .... i told him that if he could wait for a second that i could give my phone to my friend in the backseat of my car so that he could call my insurance company and lookup my policy number so longstory short after all this talking a second officer showed up and was shinning a light into my passenger side window which was by the way all the way down also. After throwing my phone into the back seat the officer at the passenger window told the cop who pulled me over that i threw something into the back seat clearly they knew that it was a cellphone ..... anyways they used that as an excuse to unlawfully order me and my brother out of the car. at that point that had my friend and my brother patted down they told them to sit on the curb as they looked through my car with flashlights ...... they didnt find nothing and we didnt have anything on us either the funny part about this is that they didnt even search me nor did they pat me down ........ the cop just told me to stand in front of his police crusier obviously where his dashcam was playing and he started to ask me questions ...... He asked me what im going to college for and i explained that i wanted to be a cop just like him .... then he asked me where i got the car from and when and i explained it to him .... he then asked me if there were any drugs or weapons in the car and obviously said no because i didn't. Finally in the end they were done with their traffic stop the officer who pulled me over in the first place gave me a ticket for inproper display of my Licnese plates. He kept rambling on about how he gave me a break that he could have towed my car and given me a ticklet for not having insurance on me either. In the end i considered it blackmail the officer obviously took advantage of three teenagers he thought we didnt know the law and he invaded our rights. i was cooperative the entire time i had my hands on the wheel lights on etc .. There was no reason for the ticket that i got it wasnt my fault for anything that night. and it was illegal for them to lie and search my car and friends
Great Police Department, I have grown up with most of the police officers and I can say over the 32 years I have witnessed dedication, hard word, honor and loyalty to profession and to the community. Some of those officers have retired, and some are still working Ummm, like my favorite Captain Charles Zulla :
Cops are used as cash register for this town. one cannot even go down the shire without having someone in your pocket. taxes are high in NJ. Keep your shore town. I am finished with nonsense.
I recently needed the BBPD’s assistance with an issue that was sensitive and uncomfortable. They responded quickly and professionally and took care of the situation immediately. Thank you BBPD!
Worst of the worst.
