www.brehm.org Brehm School is a family-style boarding school for boys and girls, grades 6-12 with learning disabilities. Brehm offers a unique holistic program that addresses each student’s academic, emotional and social needs.
Welcome to Brehm School - a small, fully accredited, not-for-profit coeducational boarding school for students with learning disabilities or differences, and employing a staff of 150. We limit our focus to 90 students a year.
Since 1982, in partnership with families just like yours, Brehm has been successfully teaching students with language-based and complex learning disabilities to “learn how to learn.” Our “family style” 24/7 school is uniquely designed to foster independence and responsibility. Where other schools have failed students, Brehm delivers success.
Brehm students go on to college, find fulfilling careers and become successful entrepreneurs.
Brehm has been successfully educating children and teenagers with learning disabilities for more than thirty years. This experience has shown that a boarding school environment is the most effective way for students with learning disabilities to achieve their full potential. Brehm offers extensive individualized support to monitor and care for students after their academic day is finished. After-school tutoring is available if needed or requested by parents, and an assortment of activities are scheduled for students after their school day. In recognition of this specialized program, the U.S. Department of Education named Brehm School a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 1992-1993. Brehm was the first and only boarding school for students with learning disabilities to be honored at that time.
Brehm School is a private boarding school for students with learning disabilities. Our mission is to empower students with complex learning disabilities and differences to recognize and optimize their potential throughout their lifetime. Brehm employs a holistic approach by evaluating the individual needs of each student throughout the academic year.
Students enrolled at Brehm School come with a variety of challenges to academic, social or emotional success including, but not limited to:
Specific learning disability: defined as a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, that may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or to do mathematical calculations, including conditions such as perceptual disabilities, brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, dyslexia, and developmental aphasia.
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Pervasive Developmental Disorder/Asperger’s Disorder
Nonverbal Learning Disability (NLD)
Communication disorders
Auditory Processing Disorders
Processing and memory deficits
Tourette Syndrome
Anxiety
Brehm’s diverse staff customizes a program for each student’s needs, which makes Brehm a leading innovator among schools for learning disabilities. To help students achieve their goals, Brehm faculty trains students to use assistive software such as Dragon Naturally Speaking, Kurzweil 3000, Fast ForWord, and Inspiration.
Brehm’s faculty and staff are especially trained to educate students with nonverbal learning disability challenges. Administration manages student enrollment so that faculty and staff have the time and resources to give students individualized support. Classroom sizes range from just one to eight students per class. Brehm’s administration team also continuously researches student learning disabilities, which is a primary reason that so many of Brehm’s graduating LD students continue their education after graduation.
Private schools for LD students are often the only way that children with learning disabilities get a chance to discover what they are truly capable of doing with their lives. The truth is that most public and private schools are unable to give students with learning disabilities the help they need. Schools for learning disability students, on the other hand, are set up with small classes and a great deal of individual attention. At Brehm School each student receives individualized instruction that provides the strategies and techniques to overcome his or her specific challenges.
