It is easy to pass the Broad Brook Library without even noticing it. In the middle of Main Street, Broad Brook, this unassuming white building looks like a reminder of our town’s past. However it is a working library; free to the public since June 1919.
The Broad Brook Library has maintained its commitment to bring a variety of new books to the public. Our small library offers a little bit of everything: classic and modern children’s books, fiction, non-fiction, cook books, history books, biographies, and new fiction. You won’t find a computer here, but you will find the perfect book to explore.
Lifelong Broad Brook resident, Beryl Wilson, was the librarian for 20 years. She greeted everyone with a warm welcome and remembered her regular customers by name. The library is decorated with paintings by Virginia W. Schoenleher, Beryl’s first grade teacher; a woman who inspired her students to read with a classroom reading contest. Beryl read the most books in her class that year and won a tennis racket and two balls for the achievement.
As Beryl recovers from some medical issues and to help expand the library’s hours, we have added Patricia Shary to our library staff. Patricia is always happy to welcome you to the library and to help you find what you need.
The town has cut the Broad Brook Library’s budget for many years, eliminating funding completely in 2016. Our little library stays open through the help of local businesses and neighbors as we operate on rapidly shrinking funds. We are working on some fundraisers to help keep this still used and useful piece of history open.
