Brooklyn Yoga School is a school for Classical Yoga in Park Slope. All classes are offered by donation. Classes for beginner to experienced students.
What is Yoga by Donation? Yoga and the teachings of liberation are priceless. They have been passed down from teacher to student for thousands of years without charge. In this spirit, all of the classes at the Brooklyn Yoga School are offered solely by donation. It is left to each student to decide what to give in exchange for class. This helps to keep the classes affordable for students of varying financial situations. It is also a practice in itself of re-evaluating our relationship to the economic system: with no mandatory fee it is at the students discretion to assign value to the programs and take it on themselves to decide what is "their money's worth".
We rely on your best judgment to meet our operational expenses. We offer the minimum donation of $5 per class so that anyone can practice at our school, regardless of financial limitations. However the $5 class donations are not sustainable enough for us to remain open. The average donation we need is $10 per class, with the optional $15 donation on the higher end of the spectrum. This sliding donation scale leaves you the room to decide what works for you each time you come, all while supporting the classes you take and the teachers you love!
"By being generous -- not only with material things but also with your time, your energy, your forgiveness, your willingness to be fair and just with other people -- you create a good world in which to live." - Thanissaro Bhikkhu
Classical Yoga is a method to open to the vast potential of who we are. Through postures, breathing, meditation, relaxation, chanting and yogic philosophy anyone can purify (and heal) the body, settle the mind, and open the heart. These techniques are thousands of years old, and yet completely applicable to our modern lives. Through these practices one can cultivate strength, compassion, patience, courage, joy and ultimately freedom from suffering. Happiness is who we are. Yoga simply helps us find it in ourselves.
All classes are offered on a donation sliding scale:
$10 Minimum Donation
$15 Standard Donation
$20 Higher Range Donation
please note: we take cash or credit card for payment
All classes are drop-ins. We recommend arriving early to ensure your place. Doors open 15 minutes before class starts. Mats and towels are available to rent.
