Brooktrails Fire Department K-9 “Ashes” is a certified accelerant detection dog. Ashes is a five-year-old English chocolate lab that was donated to Brooktrails Fire Chief Daryl Schoeppner by Helena and David Johnson from the Willits KOA to be specifically trained as an accelerant detection dog. Ashes was born June 21, 2008 and graduated from the Canine Academy Training Center in Leander Texas. Ashes spent three months in the Academy becoming proficient in her skills. After the three-month period Chief Schoeppner joined her for a two-week training program that allowed both handler and dog to be certified as an accelerant detection team. Ashes is trained to detect many types of ignitable liquids such as gasoline, kerosene, lighter fluids, diesel fuel, and many more. An accelerant detection K-9 assist the investigator in determining the origin area of a suspicious fire. Samples of the alerted areas by the canine are drawn then sent to our crime lab for laboratory analysis. Arson K-9 Ashes is a donation driven program through the Brooktrails Fire Department. No public tax dollars are used to support feed or train Ashes. Ashes’ support is only through donations of the public that help pay for her medical care upkeep and training. Ashes is supported by the Mendocino County Fire Chiefs Association, the Brooktrails Firefighters Association and the public. Local resident Mrs. Carol Jones handles all of the funding received and pays all of the bills that Ashes may incur. Ashes is fortunate to have the support of Canidae pet foods and providing her with her food and helping keep her healthy and ready to work. Dr. Sara Rice from the Mendocino Animal Hospital provides at a discount all of her veterinarian care. Dr. Rice routinely (twice a year) does a complete physical and blood work to ensure that she stays healthy and ready to work at all times.
