Description

We are celebrating our 21st year of operation! The museum began at CALM with 800 sq. ft. and a small display of local fossils. Today we are in a 20,000 sq. ft. building with 16,000 sq. ft. of exhibits. Within the exhibits areas are many treasures from Kern County and the World. Local Fossils from Miocene Epoch (14 million years ago), including many rare, one of a kind and impressive fossilized specimens found on Shark Tooth Hill just Northeast of Bakersfield. Additionally, there are African, Asian and North American animals mounts, gems, minerals, significant collection of Petrified Woods, a Native American interpretive life size family dwelling area representing the local valley tribe the Yokuts and over 2,000 sq. ft. of mind stimulating hands-on science activities within the Oh! Zone. The Oh! Zone is an interactive Science exhibit area designed with children in mind, but has something for all ages to enjoy. BVMNH is the only museum in Central Californian that has Anatomy, Astronomy Anthropology, Archaeology, Biology, Geology, Paleontology and a discovery center all under one roof. Other areas within the museum are full working Paleo lab, Classroom, Research Library, Repository, workshop and storage area.

After living in Bakersfield for over 15 years, I finally decided to check out this museum. The kids loved it. The older lady running the desk was extremely nice and very knowledgeable. Some of the interactive models they have here do not work. For example, they have some tables with quizzes that light up the proper answer to the question asked, but when you press the button, not all the lights work. Again, the kids loved it, and that's all that matters. This will definitely be a place for me to bring the kids when we want to get away from the Bakersfield heat.
Free admission, but a donation is appreciated. Just signed the guestbook, and then got a tour. It was lovely to learn about Carpinteria and surrounding areas history. Very interesting, and they have a flea market at the end of every month.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
A smaller but decent local natural history museum. Lots of taxidermy. I can see where they are working to modernize exhibits. Gems and minerals were a highlight for me.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$6–10
We had lots of fun here , looks small but the museum is 3 stories with an elevator. My kids ages 2-8 had a lot of fun , tons of activities for the kids as well as science projects on certain days. Staff is very friendly , knowledgeable and awesome!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Bought an annual pass which is great for other museums. Went with son dnl and grandkids 6yo 7yo. We all enjoyed the museum and kiddos had such a great time, they said they would go back many times. Would have given 5 stars but looks like it needs some TLC. Wide variety of exhibits, recommend getting an annual pass.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$6–10
Great museum. Cozy, old school displays, not crowded, great way to learn about natural history, especially the local chapters of it. Our 10 years old loved it, and so did we. She is really into rocks and fossils, and there was plenty of both on display, as well as in the little gift shop area. Great to visit before going for a dig on the sharkooth hill.
I really enjoyed my time here with my siblings! Its short interior is not to be underestimated as it packs a substantial amount of interesting fossils and beautiful minerals and gemstones. I do think that some of the activities in the museum need updates and renovations to some lighting fixtures and children's activities. Also spinny chair makes me dizzy ‍‍
A small storefront operation downtown, sure, but takes its modest fossil collection seriously. We were surprised to see several cases bulging with remnants of marine life that lived millions of years ago. Many of the specimens were collected locally, left from an ancient age when Bakersfield was under the Pacific. Also a little wildlife taxidermy in there, if that's your thing.
This was such a cute museum with alot of info and variety. It is on the smaller side and some things are older but it has genuine charm. They participate in Museums for All and discount for EBT snap users among other discounts. Everyone very friendly we encountered. Lots of info on sharks and native people. And a nice local dino selection and education. Lots to learn You got to really see close the taxidermy animals and they had a great selection.
Great stop at this place when you go south or back. Plan a stop for one or two hours here, see all the great exhibitions. Have some food nearby. It will be a must and we will try next time.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$6–10
