In November, 1982, Kathy and Dave Burdett took a “giant leap of faith” and purchased an existing gun and fishing tackle store located in Hearne, Texas. Burdett & Son Sporting Goods operated in Hearne until July, 1992 at which time it was relocated in the Townshire Shopping Center on Texas Avenue in Bryan.
At this time the name was changed from Burdett & Son Sporting Goods to Burdett & Son Outdoor Adventure Shop. The character of the business changed to add ammunition, reloading components and equipment, archery and Boy Scout inventory was increased. Fishing tackle was discontinued.
In June of 1997, Townshire Shopping center was to get a “face lift”, rent was going up considerably and again it was time for a move to the more popular shopping area in town – College Station.
So, the store doubled in size when it relocated to the Redmond Terrace Shopping Center in College Station. Hiking boots, backpacks, new lines of clothing, kayaks, canoes and even a few sailboats were added to the inventory. Archery equipment was discontinued at the new location. Things were going great until the original owners of Redmond terrace passed away and their daughter did not want to continue renting retail space. The shopping center was sold and all the tenants “kicked out” in order to demolish the center and rebuild to accommodate the large “box” retailers.
Once again we faced the hard task of moving our store and relocating in our own building at the present location in June of 2002, at 1055 Texas Avenue South in College Station. Large items such as canoes and kayaks and our inventory of hiking boots were discontinued for lack of space. The already popular lines of Browning, Winchester, Glock, Smith & Wesson, Springfield and many others were expanded over the last ten years to accommodate the popularity of firearms and firearm accessories.
Our present location has served us well with a small classroom, a gunsmith shop and a hallway full of gun safes. The ownership continues with the Burdett family – Dave, Kathy and Barry. Barry, an Eagle Scout, has had extensive experience in back packing and competitive shooting. He is an accomplished gunsmith – from building a custom rifle to repairing or fine tuning all handguns, rifles and shotguns.
We are located across from the Texas A&M golf course (just south of the main entrance to campus), next door to Chili’s Restaurant.
