Most of moms side of the family is here, including her & dad. My in laws are here, as is a niece. Old cemetery, interesting monuments.
My grandma passed in October 2020 and we have visited her and my grandpa's sight about every two weeks since then. We have always had to maintain their spot ourselves- clean leaves, trim the grass, pull weeds- for the past 13 months. We went to visit before Thanksgiving and saw that a small angel statue we had on the site is now missing. I understand items have to be out of the way for upkeep, but we are the only ones even upkeeping their grave. Very upsetting to have no way of getting it back; it seems that memorial items going missing is a common trope here.
Went to visit my Parents site and the Bronze Marker was missing . I have called 5 times. Two work orders were put in to search for the marker . Several promises to call me back never happened. Michelle from the Cemetery asked me “ What do you intend to accomplish”. My parents worked hard all of their lives. My Dad struggled to pay for the marker. If it is missing I would like to replace it and the WW2 bronze medallion that he earned for his service to our Country. Not a nice place to bury your loved ones.
I paid in full for my father's grave stone several months ago. Was finally called and informed that the stone would be installed in the morning last Friday September 11. We went to see it that evening. It had not been installed. When I called on Tuesday, I was that management thought that the grounds keepers had in fact installed it. It is Wednesday evening, and I haven't even received a phone call! The grave stones that are in the ground are so completely covered with grass that you have to pull grass to read the stones. Terrible service. I would definitely not pay in full.
From what I can remember, they were alright with burial procedures. Stone maintenance is bad. I've gone up there a few times with my own trimmer and trimmed my family's stones and a few in their rows that were almost completely grass covered that you wouldn't know stones were there. I've been there and have seen Enviroscapes out there in teams trimming. They are obviously doing a terrible job. If they trimmed stones even once about a year ago, they would not be grass covered now. I uncovered stones of a lot of Vets. Purple Heart and Bronze Star War Vets whose stones you could barely see. It's a huge cemetery but I think it could be maintained better.
I really would have given it a one but that's the lowest. The staff at Calvary was the worst. We came from Columbus Ohio,. We were told to be there at certain time. My mother waited at counter for over 20 minutes and no one wanted to wait on us and very PUT out when asked to help. They never ask what our needs for the burial. Drag us to chapel when we said we had the services in Columbus staff person was rude . My ninety year mother was burying her second son who was a combat veteran. His deaths was tragedy, we broken hearted and no one at that cemetery gave not one bit of care to us. They lost our check and was stressful. My mother still paid for long distance charges for all the unneeded phone calls. The kindest person there was the grave digger. She has called to find out when the VA is going to get stone in they gave misinformation. Finally funeral director tried to call and she was frustrated. At this point calling the diocese.
It is a peaceful final resting place. The Staff are wonderful, caring and so compassionate. Well kept and tended to.
I attended a memorial service today in their "chapel" . there were no chairs for anyone to sit, the deceased ashes were place on an end table. This was by far the most pathetic disrespectful treatment of a human that I have ever witnessed.
Founded about 1885, we now have six generations of my Irish family at rest in Youngstown's Calvary Cemetery.
I have relatives here. Cemetery is huge so it's best to know where the person/persons are when you visit their grave sites.
