Nice community YMCA with very nice fitness machines, dumbbells and cardio space. Well maintained and clean, though it lacks a variety of fitness machines. The free weight room downstairs had the minimum equipment including a bench, squat rack, dumbbells, etc, but nothing really stood out. Nice accessories for stretching and core work. Also has a nice small cycling studio and a four lane pool. Locker rooms are somewhat dated but did have a sauna. If no one is in a sauna it is usually powered down so I would suggest you power it up 15 minutes prior to using so it gets hot. A good average YMCA with the basics needed for a variety of fitness.
The best place to go if you're in Special Olympics swimming. I have gone there before with two of my students in Orono Middle School, the staff was very nice, and willing to help with anything. The pool and everything else are properly maintained by staff, but the shower in the pool area is blocked off, so don't expect it to work. However there are other showers by the locker room and bathrooms. The bus that took us there also arrived on time. However a full blown membership is needed to be able to actually use the Y daily, but that's good. Come over if you're part of Special Olympics swimming!
Great place for youngsters and adults, we have our 2.5 year old son here on swimming lessons and he has a blast each time. He is way more comfortable in the water thanks to the amazing instructors. We have not used other services yet but the place is always packed with adults and seniors. We have the monthly membership that gives you a discounted price on the kids swimming lessons and allows many other free classes and perks. We use the swimming pool at least 3-4 additional times a week, also with our son.
The staff is really friendly and helpful from when you 1st walk in until you leave. I took my 1st Group Active fitness class and was so surprised how much fun I had and how sore I was the next day. Jenn C, the instructor, had amazing energy, smooth instructions and made this first timer want to come back!
The after school workers are lazy and don’t pay attention to the kids. I have picked up child/children several times and half the time staff doesn’t know where my kids are in the building, almost everytime I pick up from outside I see kids bullying or miss behaving and the staff don’t pay attention and are out in Lala land. The staff at the front Maria is rude and don’t have a clue she’s miss placed information I dropped off several times and never took accountability, blamed me that I didn’t bring in, who’s is bs. She’s rude on the phone and I’ve seen her being rude to the kids and other parents.Ud like to see them put her in another position and replace hers with a kinder more knowable and more together staff. I’d like to see the providers actually engage with the kids and have activities planned that are age appropriate not just space out and stand around.
Super rude staff members. Brought my nephew for diving lessons we were paying for and was denied being able to use the bathroom because I’m not the paying member ???. Worse off the staff was super demeaning and derogatory. Avoid this place unless you want to be treated horribly.
First day. I decided to start with a dance class. The instructor had great energy, was great at giving instructions. As a very anxious person I felt super comfortable there. Used the fitness room after and it was great!
Staff was very helpful & willing to answer my questions! If they didn't know the answer, they sought out someone who could answer them in a timely manner. My experience was extremely pleasant and professional! I look forward to frequenting the Bangor YMCA. The lobby was neat, clean & inviting.
With there being other rooms, why hold yoga or other classes in the weight room?
A trainer walked by while I was doing yoga and insisted I put shoes on. You don’t do yoga in shoes. I told her I would wear them the next day but she demanded I go to my locker immediately and put them on. The demeaning and belittling way she spoke to someone twice her age left me feeling humiliated. I have never returned. When I called to cancel my membership, the gal insisted I come in, cancel in person and sign a form. I said I’m already in another town and don’t have time to drive back to Bangor. She said she’d send an email with a pdf of the form. I should print it out and send it. I didn’t have access to a printer but she didn’t care. They were going to pull the money out from my card anyway. I had to get a new bank card in order to stop the payment going out. When I joined another ymca in a different town, I asked them how I should cancel my membership when the time came. They said come in and cancel or just call, whichever is convenient. That’s the proper way to treat members but the unkind way Bangor ymca treats their members is despicable. They are vile.
