I went here for two nights with my school for a band camp and we had a great time! The cabins are heated and well taken care of, but there was evidance a squirrel or other small animal might have made a nest inside. The food is amazing, and a lot of it is made right at camp. The bread is especially good. Also, there are options for people with special dietary needs which are not of lesser quality. Tables did have to be set and cleaned by us, but this isn't hard and is a standard at most camps. I went during April and there was quite a bit of mud and some flooding, but the grounds look nice and the beach is a good size. I would guess the trails and property are well maintained when nature doesn't get in the way because even now they weren't bad. The staff are super friendly here and made a great effort to get to know us. They remembered activities we mentioned and asked follow up questions days later, making me feel very well welcomed. During campfire the staff put on a great interactive preformance and never lost their spirit. My only concern is to make sure cabins all have a proper amount of paper towel and are swept before a group comes in. While they are well maintained, a bit of cleaning would be a massive improvement.
I went to Camp Tawingo in June of 1972 with my school. I have never forgotten the experience. I had such a great time! I no longer live in Ontario and I just googled the camp now and I swear the place still looks the same. I remember the meals in the dining hall and I remember the huge cookies we had in the evening with hot chocolate. We all did an overnight canoe trip where we had to portage. The only bad part of the experience is that I was never able to get up water skiing. Everyone tried really hard to teach me but they said I was the first ever failure. To this day I have never tried water skiing again. Anyway,I’m happy to see the camp is still going strong and wanted to tell you that it left me with incredible memories!
I visited the Camp for the day, during the winter season. Sarah, the organizer we were connected with at the camp, was great. She was helpful during the booking process, and was completely amazing in-person. Animated, lively, energetic. The camp is beautiful, we didn't stay overnight - it's not an option in the winter, but we used the lodge during the day - it was clean, big, lots of rooms, lots of things to do, games, relax, gather round. Lots to do during the day outside, x-country skiing, snowshoes, sledding, and a beautiful fire pit.
16 of us spent one full day at Tawingo and loved every minute of it. The property is fabulous. Our guide Sarah is fabulous too - all smiles and positivity, flexible to accomodate the group and its needs. Laughton Hall is a huge two story building with a number of rooms, so people could do different activities in different places at the same time - eating lunch or a snack, chatting, playing board games, playing active games and more. Bad weather wouldn't stop us from keeping ourselves entertained in that facility. Several sofas supported some of us who needed a snooze mid day. We appreciated the coffee, tea and hot chocolate and the warm welcoming nature of the building. A great trek up Eagle Mountain gave us a gorgeous view over Lake Vernon. We hiked, snow-shoed, cross-country skied, tried kick-sledding, several initiative group games and finally roasted marshmallows over a campfire amidst all the snow. We did so much in one short day. We are already planning our next visit, this time for longer. Thank you Sara and Tawingo for a wonderful day!
My son has been going to 3rd Session for two years now and loves it. My brothers and I went as kids and had great experiences as well. 2020 should be another great year.
Went to Camp Tawingo for an end of elementary school year trip. Yes, set up and clean up in the dining hall was part of the experience, cabins were rustic, but heated, an orienteering competition was a highlight along with DIY entertainment activities each night. It was too cold to go on the small lake. I attribute this camp experience as the reason I detest northern climates and prefer to vacation in urban centres mostly in warm climates.
Amazing summer camp would come again. I have a question what is the best session
I went here for two years. This summer and last would have made it 4, I'm sad camp had to cancelled but it was for good reason of course. I would have gone back for those years if not for covid. I've made several lasting friendships here. It might not be the fanciest place on earth but that isn't what camp is about. The staff is so caring and clearly love what they do. They were also so accommodating to dietary restrictions which was awesome. If you're looking for a place to send your kid, this is definitely the spot.
I have great winter memories as a kid going here. My family and I spent one weekend every year at Tawingo, and it was lots of fun. From cross-country skiing, to hiking, then a sauna in the middle of the forest. IT WAS GREAT!
Horrible experience specifically said I was Muslim and got served pulled pork multiple times on a school trip
