Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge

Description

The Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Tucker County, West Virginia, was the 500th National Wildlife Refuge to be established in the United States. The refuge preserves a moist valley with unique wetlands and uplands at a relatively high elevation in the Allegheny Mountains. It is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service .HistoryAdvocacy for the establishment of a wildlife refuge in Canaan Valley began as early as 1961. In the 1970s, environmental and citizens' groups battled with Allegheny Power Systems (APS), which had owned more than 13000acre of Canaan Valley since 1923, over construction of a long-anticipated hydroelectric facility that would have flooded about a quarter of the valley. In 1977, the Federal Power Commission issued a license to APS for construction of a pumped storage hydroelectric project, formally known as the Davis Power Project. However, the following year the Project was denied a Clean Water Act permit by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps' decision cited adverse impacts upon the Valley's wetlands, a relatively new concept at the time.Canaan Valley NWR was initially approved following an Environmental Impact Statement on May 30, 1979. APS appealed the Corps' decision all the way to the Supreme Court, which in 1988 declined to hear the case, thus clearing the way for creation of the refuge. About 86acre were purchased in the valley to establish the refuge on July 11, 1994. Another 12,000 acres (48 km2) were purchased from APS in 2002. With other additions, most recently 120 acres in 2008 and 325acre in 2011, the refuge now encompasses some 16628acre of a total authorized size of 25459acre. This represents almost 70% of the valley's 25000acre.

We had the whole area to ourselves and it was wonderful!!! We only had enough time to do a couple trails but we enjoyed every minute. So many Beautiful birds to see!!!
The Beall Trail was an easy leisurely hike. Rolling terrain and beautiful views of the area, leading into a canopy covered trail winding through the woods. I did not stop at the Wildlife Office, but I intend on hitting other trails for further photography and reviews.
Lots of trails and not a lot of people
This is a great wildlife refuge in the most beautiful part of West Virginia. It's recently been expanded with excellent displays depicting the natural and cultural history of Canaan Valley. Stop at the visitor center and ask for a trail map to find out where to hike and explore. The refuge is also adjacent to Canaan Valley State Park which is a privately manager resort with a lodge, golf course, trails, camping, skiing, and more. This area features amazing Balsam Fir, wildflowers, wildlife and clean mountain air
Knowledgeable staff and volunteers. Great area for birding, recommend birding along the easily accessible areas of Cortland Road with trail access along the Beall Tract, Timberline Road, and the boardwalk on Freeland Road. More adventurous options but well worth the time are the areas and trails accessible off of A-Frame Road in the north end of the valley as well as the areas accessible off the end of Camp 70 Road from Davis.
A small refuge but nice.
Stopped here to get oriented about the wildlife refuge. There was a very helpful employee who walked me through the maps for the wildlife refuge, as well as for the state park land. There are no trails that are accessible from the visitor center, you have to get in your car and drive to the trailheads. There's only a very short interpretive trail at the visitor center.
Very beautiful place with lovely views. The walking area was nice for exploring the area with kids.
Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge is a wonderful place to visit. The staff if very friendly and helpful. There is a small gift shop. The first Friday of every month they offer story time for the children followed by craft time with snacks. There are so many hiking trails available surrounded by this majestic WV scenery. Definitely a place you want to visit.
The man working there is very informative about the area.. was there mostly to see Elakala and Blackwater Falls so didn't spend a lot of time checking out other areas.
