I was drawn into the Cardinal because of feel that surrounded the outside of it. A hub of activity with public transportation dropping all sorts of human conditions off from busses and trains but also bicycles, cars and bushes too! A bit dark and dingy inside. More restaurant than bar and only beer for alcohol I had forgotten that these places were still around. A couple of domestic pints rang in at $8.50. It wasn’t crowded but their set really only has 6 or 7 seats at the bar and flows right into restaurant seating with chi a bit off to me. Service was fine with that little bit rough around the edges charm coming raising others kids for most of life. I’ll swing in another time. Maybe take the train and check out their food as they’ve been around awhile so something’s been done right. Parking: Small lot behind the joint. The Cardinal has its own little parking lot just across the street to the south that’s free. Street parking is iffy with all the activity but a few spots here and there..
My server and I disagreed on something trivial. Like showing a picture of my ID on my phone would be the same as having it. and instead of agreeing to disagree and bring me my order. Staff said they would not feed me and to get out as if I offended their mother. I came for the juicy Lucy but got the boot. Because someone like me shouldn’t speak back to someone …….
A DELIGHTFUL DIVE BAR! We were visiting the Twin Cities from Milwaukee - looking for a typical bar with a Friday fish fry and the Cardinal popped up on Google. It's an old run down neighborhood bar with billiards and kareoke next to a light rail station and the huge grain elevators. They offerred all you can eat battered fish for $15.95 but that did not come with a side of soup or sald and fries, just cole slaw and regular fries. The regular menu fish comes with 2-3 pieces of fish, soup or salad and choice of potato for $10.95!! It was a delicious bargain! The fish was lightly battered, crispy and nice thick chunks of cod or haddock. The clam chowder had more clams in it than most and the sweet potato fries were great 4 choices of fries from regular cut to crinkle or waffle or sweet as well as tater tots no extra charge. My wife had a turkey, cranberry and blue cheese salad that was a full meal. She said it was great. The eating area is well lighted and family friendly. Beer and drink prices were reasonable. Super friendly patrons and staff. This place is an old school gem. We will not miss coming back at our next visit.
This is a surprisingly welcoming bar for children. The staff really makes my toddler feel welcomed every time we come here. They always bring out a surprise for him color book, stuffie , or something like that. Artistic kids get their creations added to the "Kids' Wall". The cliental also seem to enjoy kids and frequently chat with him too. I highly recommend stopping by. Kid-friendliness: The staff is very welcoming to children! They have a 'Kid's Wall' full of kids artwork. They always bring out a nice surprise for the kiddos to play with while the adults order food. They kids menu has a good variety of bar food for kiddos.
This place is what you hope for for a local urban bar. Games. People who are friendly and the right kind of loud. Incredible service, kind and personal even when busy. This place should be on a national registry or something. Our 6YO twins even got prizes from other people who won them from the Toy Chest. Come here for events, watching games, playing games, or just an affordable bite and pint. Kid-friendliness: Had games. Had a solid kids menu. Had games available to play. The staff went above and beyond for our kids. Parking: Parking was great. Closer lot was full, so we went across the street
They have excellent hamburgers and I’ve eaten there in years but I never tried the fish fry until last week. Seriously I thought it was frozen fish fillets re-battered in a beer and shaped like frozen fish fillets little triangles I eat many frozen fish fillets in my lifetime. Lol and then deep-fried wasn’t good at all ……..you can tell it was dark because it been re-dipped Otherwise, anything else on the menu would’ve got five stars.
Nice staff that will make you feel welcome and laugh. Great food and great prices. Fun place to play pool, darts, board games or to pregame before downtown events. Best place around for a good time, always good vibes.
Surprised how good it was! The burgers and the sweet potato fries were very delicious and fresh! Waitress was very friendly and food were served fast. Free parking is right across the street.
Love it! I have never had a bad experience with any of the staff at this amazing establishment. Julie and Kayla are my favorite servers/bartenders!! Even the owner has helped out when needed which tells me everyone actually cares for the customers and not just the income. Good food, perfect service and fun bar amenities pull tabs, darts, pool, etc and just off the blue line, makes for a great place to gather with friends or just watch the game!
This relaxing neighborhood dive bar is exactly what you are looking for! The tater tots are some of the best in the city. It is easy to get to as it is on the Light Rail at 38th street station. Decent beer selection, TVs for the game, food, pull tabs, pool, darts...something for everyone. Cheers! Edit - I raised this to 5 stars. The more I visit The Cardinal the better it gets!
