Description

Carlsbad Tavern & Restaurant was created by Michael P. Capriola in the Fall of 1995. His ideas, aspirations, and goals of creating quality food with reasonable prices in a fun and highly professional atmosphere were fulfilled quickly with the help of Judith A. Merritt and Andrew Capriola, his son.

Awards and recognition have followed, including:

• 20 Places for Hispanic Dishes: Enchantment Platter, Arizona Republic, September 2011
• 10 Favorite Spicy Dishes: Habanero Cheeseburger, Phoenix New Times, September 2011
• Top 100 Dishes in the Valley: New Mexican Potstickers, Phoenix New Times, August 2011

The New Mexican Bat Cave theme started at the original location on Scottsdale Road & Osborn with bats, Mexican Movie Posters and Roswell memorabilia. However, upon the move to Hayden & Osborn in the Spring of 1998 the Bat Cave theme took on a new shape with the creation of the Guano Canal with a waterfall on the patio and the main dining room becoming The Bat Cave with a fountain. After 12 years of adding to the décor, Carlsbad has been transformed into a place all ages can be comfortable in a multitude of different environments to suit the whole family.

The newspaper menu titled the Carlsbad Daily Guano is still famous for its adherence to hotness that is in demand by those seeking truly authentic New Mexican Grub. Many of the original and core dishes still exist today and some favorites requested by groupies are daily specials. The Daily Guano has doubled in selection size over the years and the consistency is unchanged. The pride and desire for excellence in the Kitchen and from the Service Staff has maintained the experience to be more than just a place to get a bite. You can always visit Carlsbad to be entertained as well as having the best grub on the planet.

"Carlsbad Tavern is a New Mexican restaurant established in 1995. We concentrate on the cuisine from the State of New Mexico. Although it is similar to “Mexican” food, it is different. Most of our Chiles come from the city of Hatch, New Mexico. Lots of Green & Red Chiles. New Mexican food is also known for its spice level. Meaning that it is traditionally much spicier than Mexican food. So if you are up for the challenge and looking for good food with a “kick” we got cha covered! We have a full bar and can pour a solid margarita. Give us a try if you are in the mood for some tasty grub!"

The service was the best part! The staff was super friendly, our food was out fast, and our server did a great job. My food was just okay ‍ My husband really liked his Prime Rib burrito though! I also had the cucumber mule and it was pretty good but not the best I’ve ever had. The kids likes the bats and the whole cave experience. I’d go again but not at the top of my list.
1st time, cool concept and very nice staff. Food needs improvement, their salsas were way too watery, all our order was very bland lacking flavor. We did enjoy the vibe outside by the fountain with our drinks but will probably not come back to eat here.Dine in: YesOutdoor seating: Yes
Really cool place. Our family really enjoyed the atmosphere. The food was excellent. Just what we were looking for. The waitstaff and manager made sure we had a great experience. You will be happy you went here.
I wish I had taken a picture when I walked in, under the arch. It feels like you’re anywhere but Arizona! You walk over a little bridge and there is a waterfall and pond outside. Waking through the door inside, it is a little dark and small, but I’ve only ever sat outside...it’s such a great atmosphere!! Food is good, honestly nothing special, but it is on the expensive side. Happy hour is probably better. They don’t give you chips and salsa, which is the main reason for the 4 stars. It’s pretty customary to serve chips and salsa at a Mexican restaurant, in my opinion. Maybe it’s just me. If you’re looking for a decent meal and a nice change of scenery, definitely check this place out.
Great experience here. The atmosphere is amazing, the food was really good. It can get busy but the servers do their best. Highly recommend trying the Paradise platter. Veteran owned businesses too!
I had lunch at Carlsbad Tavern a month ago. William was our server. He provided us with great service. I had the Enchantment Platter and it tasted great. They are have very good New Mexican flavors. They have been in Scottsdale for years. I hope they keep going.
We got an appetizer and drink while we waited for an entree to take home. Everything tasted fine/fresh/good, but wasn’t amazed or blown away by anything. The Green chili corn queso dip looked like velvets cheese, and honestly the BEST thing they had there was hot sauce on counter called Chipotle Habanero that we put in the dip and made in 10xs better, with some actual flavor. The entree was tasty but nothing special and the chicken was very tough to cut and chew and we did not reheat it when we got home. I ordered the cherry mule and it didn’t have much flavor but again it was “fine”. The staff and bartender were all very nice. We asked about the bottomless mimosa on sat and Sunday and they said it gets really busy, so I would probably give them another try. Also got the salsas and the green salsa was very tasty!!!
Stopped in last night for a quick bite and some drinks! Elaina R. was awesome! She was attentive, friendly, and pleasant! The food was extremely tasty and fresh. Thank you and we'll see you again soon!
Food was decent, atmosphere is really cute. Waitress was very friendly and pretty attentive. Our daughter had the Adovada Mac & Cheese which was really good. My husband had the veggie enchiladas which had an odd sauce but he still liked them, they had a good selection of veggies in them. I had the Adovada Chimi, it was alright but didn't have a ton of flavor. Both our plates came with black beans, which were pretty good, and Spanish rice which was really dried out. Chips and salsa are an extra charge of $4, not sure if you get refill or not. No hot sauce other than the bottled kind. The salsa with the chips we ordered was ok, the red is a little sweet and zero heat, the green was better with a little bit of spice. Used to New Mexico chili being super hot. Vegetarian options: There were better than average vegetarian options.
We stopped by because we are from New Mexico and were craving Chile. Really awesome concept and definitely the best Chile in the area. Food was different than what we are used to back home but was really delicious! Will be visiting again
