Description

Carmel Bakery, established in 1906, one of Carmel’s oldest running businesses has been owned by the Pèpe family for 25 years.

Rich Pèpe started working in his uncle’s bakery in New Jersey at the age of 14 and likes to say, “I’m a baker first, a chef second”. No strangers to getting up early, the motto for Pèpe and his baking crew at Carmel Bakery is “we bake while you sleep”.

As Pèpe says, “I am so proud to own this piece of Carmel history”. Equal parts bakery, deli, Starbucks Coffee Bar and neighborhood hangout, Carmel Bakery specializes in Scottish shortbread, English scones, Italian biscotti and giant soft Bavarian pretzels. Deli-style sandwiches, house made soups and fresh salads are also served.

"Step back in time at Carmel Bakery, the oldest bakery in California, and the oldest business in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Great for breakfast or lunch, the quaint 1899 bakeshop is known for its European-style pastries, GIANT pretzels, coffee, soups & sandwiches on bakery bread. Whether you're looking for a sweet treat or a savory snack, Carmel Bakery has something to satisfy your cravings."

We stopped here on our way to the beach and boy were we happy! We ordered their ice creams - Heaven which is vanilla + peanut butter + cookie crumble, Cookies n Cream & Strawberry. All their ice creams were delicious! We also got their chocolate fudge. Now the strange part. After paying for this, we stepped out and casually saw the receipt. I saw that there were 2 items which we did not order. When I went inside they mentioned that it must have been a mistake and only a manager can give us a refund. Anyways - check your bill before you leave.
Yes! Yes! Yes! Do not miss this place it is just amazing. The staff are pleasant & knowledgeable and all the bakery items look amazing. I tried the cookies, a few brownies and a pretzel. Mariannes ice cream from Santa Cruz was also amazing try thge flavor called 1020. I am going back tonight. I think I am going to get 2 chocolate chip cookies a double scoop of 1020 and make a ice cream sandwich. DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE!
Oh wow is this bakery amazing! I'm back home and crave what I got there all the time! The lobster tail was baked to buttery perfection! The shell was as crisp as glass and the cream had actual specks of vanilla bean! The cinnamon walnut rugelach was to die for! I really dream of it now haha. Just the perfect amount of sweetness and nothing was overly sweet. Can you open a location in Chicago please??
One more busy, good vibes bakery to add to my collection of favourite places. This place now only accepts credit card payments. It’s 5 pm on a Tuesday and the place is still buzzing with people! Limited seating inside. The pastries taste fresh, I had two small pastries and a steamed milk, total $4.04.
Cute little bakery on the main street in Carmel by the Sea. We wanted to order a pretzel but but they had none ready. So we ordered a cannoli in the meantime and walked around. After such anticipation for this pretzel it was not what I was expecting. I thought it would be something like a Philly pretzel but i’d compare it to fluffy warm bread with salt in the top. Not bad just not what I’m use to when I think of a pretzel.
The tried many of their pastries and they are absolutely delicious. If you’re looking for a delicious treat, this is your place!
DELICIOUS baked goods along with ice cream and hot chocolate. The chocolate dipped macaroons and apple rugelach are huge and fabulous. Everything else looks incredible. They are open later than it’s listed on Google. Often very crowded with a line out the door.
Lunch at the delightful Carmel Bakery is like a flavorful journey through pastry paradise. their cinnamon walnut rugelach got me feel all snuggled up inside. Complemented with Marianne's ice cream too! The lobster tail made me lick my fingers. Cheers to sweet bites.
18Mar23 - had to wait 20 minutes for a fresh batch of salted pretzels - darn it - so soft, warm and delicious! Bought a bunch more items to have for breakfast the next day. Glad I don’t live close or I would be here everyday gaining pounds , compliments of historic Carmel Bakery.
Based on lots of good reviews we decided to give this place a try and I can’t say that we had the same experience as others. It was very crowded, the manager was rude and the overall quality was definitely an average. I ordered chocolate cannoli and ended up with the regular one and didn’t like it. My friends liked the coconut cake though, so maybe that was the better option despite the fact that they’re famous for their cannolis. I don’t think I’ll go back there again.
