Carter Family Bowl was opened on April 16th, 1997 by Jim and Nancy Carter and is still run by them today.
The lanes were originally built in 1952 as a 12 lane center, then reconstructed to add the additional 8 lanes the following year. Though the lanes have had numerous owners, the center has a large number of regulars who are loyal to the center and frequent the lanes weekly. Many leagues have with stood the test of time as have their secretaries and are still active today after an outstanding 50 years!
Jim Carter is the son of bowling legend Don Carter, founding member of the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA). Jim grew up with bowling in his blood and proved it on the lanes. Owning many other centers and doing just about every job within the bowling industry, Jim fell in love with the small town of Winter Garden and decided this was the perfect setting for his next venture. After updating the lanes with new monitors, new carpet and a fancy paint job, the extra space was next. First, a daycare in which league bowlers were able to drop off kids during league, then a bar area, next a game room complete with pool tables, it then changed to a quilt shop and now a empty space waiting for its next mission.
Nancy Carter, originally from Sawinaw, Michigan, toured the bowling circuit and is a very successful bowler as well. Still active in current leagues at Carter Family Bowl, she brings her talent and great spirit to league bowlers and patrons alike. Nancy posses many talents as she has opened her very own quilt shop "Nancy's Quilt Shop" at 121 West Plant Street in downtown Winter Garden. She was currently occupying a large space at the center, but grew out of it in a matter of 3 years. She is still located there today and so happy to have a much larger space to fill!
The center originally opened under the name 'West Orange Bowl' and was changed in 1998 to Carter Family Bowl and lives true to that name. With their son, Thomas Carter, and daughter-in-law, Jennifer Carter, they have managed the center since 2009. Both graduates of West Orange High School, they grew up in Winter Garden, frequenting the alley as teenagers.
