Castle Rock (Kansas)

Description

Castle Rock is a large limestone pillar landmark in Gove County, Kansas. The formation and the nearby badlands are located in the Smoky Hills region of Kansas, which is approximately 11 miles south of I-70 near Quinter, Kansas.DescriptionCastle Rock was a landmark on the Butterfield Overland Despatch route (Overland Trail). The chalk was deposited in the area by an ancient inland sea. The formation was formed by the weathering of the chalk by wind and water. It received its name because it is said to look like a castle rising above the prairie.Weathering of the rock formation is increasing due to visitors climbing on the rocks. In 2001, following a thunderstorm, the tallest spire fell.On January 29, 2008, Castle Rock and Monument Rocks 31 miles to the west were jointly named as one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas.ImagesFurther readingKansas : A Cyclopedia of State History, Embracing Events, Institutions, Industries, Counties, Cities, Towns, Prominent Persons, Etc; 3 Volumes; Frank W. Worth the drive out to see. Be aware the last mile or so to the site is on a private road that is not maintained. The day we were there there were massive ruts as deep as 2 feet in places in the middle of the road from water run off. There is high ground to keep your vehicle on, but be very careful.
Great be careful which way you take to get there and home your GPS could run you strayed into a huge mud hole! Awesome views of the Kansas scenery. After get there if you drive down I suggest When you cross the cattle gate go forward don't turn right and plan on coming back the way you came. Unless you have an all-terrain vehicle. We barely made it up in our minivan. But someone in a Jeep turned off of the road.I
This was a fun detour. We were the only people out there and got to explore this amazing natural structure. The road was a little washed out so look out for that as you drive over the hill!
I went 30 miles down dirt roads to get there...and wasn't disappointed! One a couple of those miles were a little rough. The road around the "complex " had some deep ruts . I was in a van and had no problem. This is in the middle of someone's cow pasture...so kind of them to let people come see it. Truly a geological treasure
I enjoy the easy to difficult climbing, which can also be substituted for driving around if you like. It's not far off I-70. Badlands are the best part.
Are you kidding me? It's like a 20 miles drive on dirt roads and once you actually approach the rock formation the road becomes even more treacherous. Trek was not even close to worth it for such a mediocre site.
Be careful on the drive, not suited for low cars.. about 45 mins down a gravel road, but beautiful if you can make it!
Pictures do not do a justice. I always thought Moment Rocks looked small in pictures. Seeing it in person was a neat experience because the rocks are huge!
Definitely want to go in a truck. Preferably a 4x4! Not far from here is their version of the Badlands. Must see both!
Hard to get to but worth seeing
