Cava Mezze Olney, nestled in downtown Olney, Maryland, is truly a hidden gem. Despite being in operation for nearly 8 years, this restaurant somehow managed to elude our radar until today. The name "Cava" derives from the Greek term for 'high-end' table wine or wine cellar, while "Mezze," also known as "Meze," signifies a taste or a bite. Meze-style cuisine, akin to Spanish tapas, offers an array of small plates served alongside beverages or as appetizers—a culinary tradition prevalent in Greece and Turkey. With a moniker like that, one can expect a high-end establishment specializing in Mediterranean Mezze dishes. While some patrons opted for rather formal attire, the majority appeared to be locals from the neighborhood, contributing to an overall casual and welcoming ambiance. The presence of a sizable bar bench within the restaurant added to the lively atmosphere, with patrons reveling in spirited conversation and laughter, creating a festive, party-like atmosphere. Opting to sit outdoors beneath an umbrella, we relished in unhurried conversation amidst the gentle fall breezes. To kick things off, I ordered a meticulously crafted Passion Fruit Margarita, comprising silver tequila, passion fruit, lavender, and agave. It arrived adorned with elegant garnishes in a unique and stylish glass. To experience a comprehensive sampling of Greek flavors, we heeded the waiter's suggestion and selected the "Chef D Platter." This traditional Mediterranean meze platter presented a tantalizing assortment of Greek delights beautifully arranged on a generously sized serving platter. Our feast included two succulent lamb chops, 2 delectable chicken souvlaki skewers, 4 savory grilled meatballs, gyro meat, pork belly, a side of fries, along with pita, onions, and tomatoes. The crowning touch was the Tzatziki dipping sauce, featuring Greek yogurt, cucumber, mint, dill, garlic, and pickled beets. Suffice it to say, it was an ample spread, as humorously indicated on the menu: "serves 2-3 people or 1 animal, LOL." Nevertheless, I relished every bite. Notably, the restaurant's owner, Gus, is a remarkably friendly individual. He personally approached our table, introduced himself, and engaged us in pleasant conversation. Gus's warm and familiar greetings to other patrons, akin to a local villager, added a heartwarming touch to the dining experience. In sum, our dinner at Cava Mezze Olney was a delightful affair that we wholeheartedly endorse. With a bill of slightly over $50 per person, it represents excellent value for a memorable Mediterranean dining experience.
Great experience! My friend and I enjoyed our meals. The waffle was crisp yet soft. It was heavenly with berries and homemade whip cream with a drizzle of honey. Yummy! We met the owner Gus. He was very accommodating to the addition my friend wanted with her dish. You can feel the Greek warmth! I almost forgot tp mention the thirst quenching sangria! Excellent experience and would definitely recommend!!!! Kid-friendliness: Very accomadating.
Really high quality food and therefore rather expensive. We love the ambience l, the decor is chic and elegant! We’ve had almost all items on the menu over the several times we’ve visited and we enjoy most. The octopus has always been amazing, the beet salad was superb. The avocado salad was not really our favorite.Food: 4/5
This is a great spot for a date night with the Mrs. My wife and I come here at least once every two months. The food is amazing and service is just as nice. We usually always go to the Olney location and have yet to have a bad experience.
I can't believe it's taken me so long to visit here. I think part of the reason was I thought the food was similar to a different restaurant called Cava, boy that is wrong. The food, atmospheres, and service is fantastic. We came on a random Wednesday night an hour before closing and it was packed, that tells you what you need to know about the service and quality. Highly recommend the mini gyros, zucchini fritters, and hush puppies. They were all fantastic. Will be back again soon!
My boyfriend and I used to come to this Cava before they changed their brunch to select items. Since then it’s been a miss for us. The French toast was probably the best item we had although it was a little burnt. The eggs on the benedict were hard boiled and the meat was also over cooked. And lastly the fries on the mini gyros were missing. The waiter was very nice and she mentioned it to her manager. He offered us a desert on the house but at that point we were full and just ready to leave.
Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Really attentive especially with respect to food allergies, sensitivities, and restrictions. The head chef goes above and beyond and makes amazing food. Would recommend their brunch and in general.Food: 5/5
I don't normally write reviews about larger chain restaurants. Mostly because it's rarely a good experience. But this was the exception. They changed their NY Strip to a Bavette streak, and it was perfect. A better steak than across the street a Grill Marx. If you are looking for something light but filling. The service could use a little more attention, but that's no big deal. A place to go enjoy at least once a month, if not your weekly spot for a snack and a glass.
I love this place for dinner but this review is for their brunch. For me, most of the food was overly spiced for an early brunch . My wife has severe pepper vegetable pepper not cracked pepper and we were very cautious about asking our server about this, we were assured there were no peppers, with that said, she was quite ill later that afternoon, everyone else was fine do we know there were peppers somewhere! We won’t do brunch again but we’ll be back for dinner!
Tasty, high-quality if not over-priced food ... provided that it's served temperature hot. Brussels Sprouts: tasty but pieces are too large to cook fully, so some of the pieces were underdone Cauliflower: spicy sauce Village salad: sliced, mini tomatoes and onions with a dressing Shrimp: white shrimp on what looked like hummus but it's not Meatballs: three of 'em with a tomato sauce And instead of spacing out the apps and the entrees allowing us to have a relatively leisurely dinner, everything was served pretty much at the same time, preventing us from fully enjoying the meal. I suppose we'd return for a special occasion at some point as it is a higher quality of food than say Grillmarx or Sardis.
