Cedar Key Museum State Park

Description

Cedar Key State Museum is a Florida State Park located at 12231 SW 166th Court, Cedar Key, Florida. The museum displays items collected by Saint Clair Whitman, a local resident who established the first museum in his home. His collection included such items as sea shells and Indian artifacts. The museum displays these as well as dioramas depicting life around Cedar Key and contains a large collection of related historical information. An important feature of the museum is the Saint Clair Whitman house, built in the 1880s and acquired by Whitman in the 1920s. The house has been restored to depict life in Cedar Key c. 1920 - 1930. It was moved to the museum site in 1991 and restored for public viewing. The Memory Walk, a brick trail, links the house to the museum. In addition to the museum, there is a short nature trail. Among the wildlife of the park are gray squirrels, doves, mockingbirds, blue jays, woodpeckers, and green tree frogs. Native vegetation can be seen on the nature trail as well as on the museum grounds.Inside the Whitman HouseJohn MuirThe naturalist John Muir visited Cedar Key in 1867 on his historic walk from Kentucky to Florida. He wrote: For nineteen years my vision was bounded by forests, but today, emerging from a multitude of tropical plants, I beheld the Gulf of Mexico stretching away unbounded, except by the sky. What dreams and speculative matter for thought arose as I stood on the strand, gazing out on the burnished, treeless plain! The John Muir historic marker was placed on the museum grounds in 1983, commemorating his visit.

This park and museum offers the perfect break from the hustle and bustle of the tourist district of Cedar Key proper. The spacious grounds have lovely shade trees of oak and pine with a short nature trail with lovely views of the adjacent estuary and mangrove habitat. The fresh air and quietness of this location is rejuvenating.
We made a quick stop to this state park while in Cedar Key. The museum felt like a step back in time...70's. . The display cases provided a look at the many shells found in Florida, some of Florida's history as it relates to the Cedar Key area, and a building on site which was not open due to construction of a ramp...soon to be a teaching location with rooms to view of the historical house. The park ranger was friendly and the building was clean, but dated.
Unfortunately, not open on Tuesday, which is the only chance I get to visit... Nice little park with a little historical Marker, couple cannons, antique wagon & antique fireman's hose reel. Old house that's closed for renovations. And, a trail for a walk...
Entrance Fee: $2 per person. Plan on an hour long time inside the museum and 15 minutes to walk around the property. The nature trail can add another 30 minutes. Nice place to take a break and learn some history about the area. Has flushing toilets that's important to some people!
Covid rules all as we know. This was a great spot for a trail walk. Excellent spot away from tourism for a pup stroll, or even simmer with the kids for a picnic. Check out the bench under the tree and soak in the sounds.
Historical spot hidden in the wooded cedar key. Not much to look at besides the house and what is outside. Cute stop for a days out activity.
The staff was very helpful. The museum is very informative and it has alot of history there. The Wilson home from 1920 has been kept in really good condition. This is a must see if visiting Cedar Key. Entrance is only $2.00
The grounds were nice but you can't go into the museum because of Covid. I'll be glad to go back when it's open.
Excellent displays of the various periods of habitation in the area, the industries, the history. Enjoyed it very much.
Have been waiting to see the inside of this museum for a very long time. I was not disappointed. Simple but quite informative. Multiple areas showing information and artifacts found close by. Learned new things about buildings in the area as well.
