The Center for Palestine Studies is the first such center to be established in an academic institution in the United States. The mission of the new Center is to promote the academic study of Palestine in all its forms and to offer a dedicated site for sustained interchanges among scholars and students. Center activities are intended to advance the production and circulation of knowledge on Palestinian history, culture, society, and politics in diverse fields, including history, literary studies, the social sciences, religion, philosophy, law, archaeology, the arts and architecture.
Columbia University currently is the professional home to a unique concentration of distinguished scholars on Palestine and Palestinians, as well as to an award-winning supporting faculty in a variety of disciplines. In addition to extensive faculty writings and varied course offerings on Palestine and Palestinians, the university also houses an important Palestinian film collection. Building on these wide-ranging and multi-disciplinary academic interests, the creation of the Center for Palestine Studies is intended to recognize and further engage this world-class academic strength.
In its diverse activities, the Center for Palestine Studies will have a national and global reach. The Center is active in developing contacts with scholars and other institutions for the purposes of academic cooperation. Enhancements to the curriculum, library and faculty at Columbia will translate into new resources to advance the academic study of Palestine and Palestinians throughout the United States and the world. Palestine and Palestinian studies now have an institutional home for faculty, post-doctoral researchers, and students.
A mandate of the Center for Palestine Studies is to promote scholarship and facilitate exchanges with scholars, students and academic institutions in the West Bank and Gaza. The Center is committed to the academic freedom of students, faculty and schools in the Occupied Territories, as well as among the refugee populations and elsewhere in the world where scholars and students carry out academic work on Palestine and Palestinians.
