Tom Duax the owner of Central City Liquors has been an entrepreneur since 1984. His first venture was the Maidrite on the corner of 10th and Locust in downtown Des Moines. The First location for Central City Liquors was next door and was originally a "Whirl Whip" with a walk up window. On March 1, 1987, the State of Iowa went out of the liquor business and allowed it to be sold privately. Tom did his research and realized that opening a liquor store was profitable venture. In 1987 he closed the ice cream shop and opened Central City Liquors. In 1995 there was a fire at the location and moved the store to its current location on 2nd Ave.
Tom has two sons and six grandchildren, his son Brian currently manages the wholesale department. His wife has owned a salon with four stations since 1986. It is Creative Cutters in Urbandale. Tom's biggest accomplishment is that he has kept is business going for so long. It could be due to many things including providing insurance and retirement for his employees. Currently there are 12 employees and seven delivery trucks and recently expanded his wholesale space for the growing market.
Central City Liquors is best known for its ability for special orders. Special orders, allows Central City Liquors to purchase over 170 single malt scotches. There are always tastings at the store. The store has a large selection of Tequila, Whiskey and Bourbon. You can also find specialty products like Premium Pickled Garlic & Spiced Beans & Asparagus Spears.
