This bar can’t keep employees and fires the good ones. The owner, Tanya, is incompetent. There’s no management structure and she expects the employees to pick up her slack. The AC can’t keep up, I’ve personally found black specs in my ice, leading me to believe that the ice machine never gets cleaned, picture is proof, and constantly running out of inventory. I’m reporting the moldy ice to the food safety department. I was there last Monday and they didn’t even have pork for their Cuban sandwiches. I tried to go in on a Tuesday a couple weeks back and they ran out of their seafood pealle, they were totally out of toilet paper, and employees mention all of these problems to the owner and she does nothing about it and doesn’t seem to care. She isn’t ever there anyways.
If you’re a paella lover, like us, check out Ceviche’s Cuban seafood or vegan paella! Tuesdays is a $10 special on paella. It was delicious, so much so that we ordered 4 of them. Different than a Spanish paella not in concept but overall flavor, but still amazing. Served with awesomely seasoned plantains and bread slices, plump shrimp and a mix of other seafoods, this dish was fantastic. Definitely something worth not skipping out on, and would be great as take out, too. Ropa Vieja: shredded beef and vegetables was very flavorful. Hard to beat the paella but we still loved it and all tried a bite. Flavor was on point. Diablo Shrimp: spicy shrimp with tons of capers, if I could combine this with the paella I would be in heaven. Very different flavors, but the diablo shrimp was sooooooo good. The latter two dishes came with an option of rice and beans or a salad. We opted for salad but they both came with rice and beans. No worries, a salad was brought out anyhow, which I loved but the others did not; tons of green olives, onions, avocados and peppers, this was definitely a “Jessica-style salad”! Espresso martini was awesome. Really really good wasn’t mine but I tried a sip and it was fab.
First time here and went with a small group on a weekday. Excellent mojitos! Got the cubano sandwich which was prepared to perfection. Great staff and service. Thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and vibe. Will definitely be back soon.
I have been a regular here for years and the bartender david kills it every time. knows my drink when i walk in. But last on Saturday 8/26 when i walk in i sat at the bar 10 min. No one ask me if wanted a menu or drink l. I watched the bartender take several shot and sit on there phones. It was just disappointing to see one of my favorite bars go down hill.
This Cuban bar restaurant was chosen only because it was open on memorial day. We got lucky we stayed 2 1/2 hours had a beautiful little corner table with two other friends. One of us had to explain very particular dietary needs. The waitress was super and the cook also excellent! We loved our food and we enjoyed being inside. Certainly, we will be back and this time, it will be a choice rather than just because it was open on Memorial Day
Oh my goodness!!!!! The food and the atmosphere are great. Jackie is awesome. We started off with tostones and stormy mule. I had the yuca and cabbage salad. My husband had the ceviche on tostones and Cuban bread. I will be going back before I leave Des Moines to have the vegan Paella. The service was great!!!! If you are in downtown Des Moines you have to go!!!!
Wow this was such a bad experience. I never make reviews unless the place is really bad or good but this place was TERRIBLE. We ordered stormi mule, Cuban margarita, tostones, and ceviche platter. Our drinks were so bad that we had to send it back and not order anything else. The mule was flat and had ginger beer that was from a gun which made it gross. The mule had old pineapple juice and was not garnished correctly. The food came out wrong and gross. The tostones were SO salty that I had to spit it out. The ceviche tasted like only lime juice. We’ve had good ceviche and I know it does not have an overpowering taste of lime. It had this weird oil film on it like it was sitting in the back see picture. The server gave us the wrong order and gave us the shrimp cocktail from another table, so I tried it and it was also gross. There was poop still in the shrimp which was so unappetizing. The food looks great coming out but after examine the entrees and appetizers, you can tell this food does not look and taste like it was supposed to. Never coming back, super disappointed.
Coming from Miami, very impressed with the quality of the food. Some things are weird, like putting cheese on pan con lechon, but I just ordered it without. Flavors hit well. There’s also a very cool basement that’s worth checking out. Pan con lechon: 8/10 Tostones: 6/10 a little too thin and soft Moros: 8/10
First time coming here. Grabbed quick lunch, the cubano sliders are bombnot pictured. Yuca frita also very good served with spicy mayo dipping sauce. The ceviche was ok. Good drink selection and Service was very friendly. Will come back.
Update. Came back for lunch. Just an appetizer and mojito. Super good. Service was great but not much movement in the restaurant. Monday night special is an $8 Cubano. We walked in and could clearly tell they didn’t have much staff to help with the rush. I get it and then kind of don’t. They should definitely have at minimum two servers on a night they’re offering specials. We waited about 10mins for two mojitos. The other two tables had yet to order or receive drinks. I just wasn’t in the mood to wait. We paid, left a great tip, and left. I don’t dine here very much. When I have, it’s good. It typically takes long than usual if they’re busy. Definitely suggest it if you’re in the area for an early dinner.
