Chestnut Ridge Park

Description

Chestnut Ridge Park is a 1213acre park in Orchard Park, New York, originally named for the chestnut trees on its hills. It is currently the largest park operated by the Erie County Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry, and is open year-round.The Chestnut Ridge Park property was acquired by Erie County in 1926, and it was one of the first parks established by the county. The park's facilities and landscapes were improved substantially by the Works Progress Administration throughout the 1930s.Facilities and attractions The park has facilities and space for tennis, hiking, disc golf, snowmobiling, sledding and other outdoor activities. The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra has held summer concerts at the base of the sledding hill, which provides an amphitheater-like setting. On a clear day, the sledding hill offers views of Buffalo and Lake Erie. Toboggan chutes also operate on the sled hill during the winter. The Eternal Flame Falls, a small waterfall containing a natural "eternal flame," is located within the park. The falls are situated within what was once known as the Shale Creek Preserve, a wilderness area formerly owned by the Buffalo Museum of Science. A tower facility used for firefighter training is located on the premises. Although said to be one of the largest county parks in the United States, at least one larger county park is located nearby. The 2500acre Mendon Ponds Park, a county park in Monroe County, New York, is situated approximately away.

This Park has so many treasures! But today we visit the top of the sledding hill near the casino and commissioner's pond. Such a beautiful clear perfect day. A very well kept park with lots sof trails too. Restrooms: Clean and big Dog-friendliness: Dogs are allowed on leash. Bring poo bags.
Nice Building & on weekends there is a small restaurant inside. restrooms. in the WINTER You can sled, toboggan, saucer, tube. Shelters in area. trails. You gotta see the Eternal Flame. really fixed that up [ We saw it b4 it was groomed ]. All I can see is Come and see for Yourself... Ray and Margie H.
I absolutely love this park. I've been to many states and have never found a park like this. Beautiful views, a lot of trails, a lot of wildlife, playgrounds, Frisbee golf. Don't forget to visit the eternal flame!!!! They have shelters for rent. Great place for biking. They also have a lake located at the commissioners cabin.
Beautiful place to relax. Plenty of options to please every preference. Short walk to eternal flame. Main lodge is always spacious and clean. Plenty of winter and summer activities. Beautiful views. Well maintained. Easy access on main road from Orchard Park to Boston New York. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the quiet beauty of the park or enjoy yoga in the park on Wednesday evenings.
We love taking our dogs here to hike. There are some great trails although some can get a bit steep so they are not all senior dog friendly but most are. There are bathrooms all over, they are clean and accessible. There are numerous pavilions and places to pull off and park once inside. There is a casino you can rent for parties and in the winter there is an amazing hill for sledding.
The park is well maintained. The kids playground is very inclusive and has something for all ages and physical abilities. I love the various restoration projects that are underway and the kids enjoyed fishing at the lake with grandpa. Great place for getting lots of steps in.
Personally, this is a fairly local park for many people who live in the 716 area code. It's one of the best parks to go hiking at. No matter what difficulty you hike at, it's great. The scenery is beautiful all year round. A good time of year to spend most of your time? Well each season is great there. Spring is perfect if you are a mud explorer. Summer is a great time to creak walking. Fall is perfect to go if you want to watch the leaves change. Winter is perfect for sledding. There is also a part of the park that is set up for frisbee golf.there are fun playgrounds at shelters you can rent which is great for family gatherings. There is even the famous eternal flames waterfall. So much to do at this park. It will take multiple trips to explore it all. I highly recommend this park. It's worth the drive!!! Playground: There is a good amount of playgrounds throughout the park. They just installed a new one near the entrance to the hiking/ walking side of the park. Definitely full of so many different things to enhance a child's mind for play. Definitely worth checking out. Restrooms: During the off season the bathrooms are closed for use. But during the summer they are open. They are scattered around the park. And if you need a map, they have them at the casino on top of the sledding hill. And the casino also has bathrooms as well. Dog-friendliness: Pets are welcome so long as they are on a leash. Some people that take their dogs off the leash really monitor their dogs as they are walking. But it is highly recommended that you check your furry friends after walking around the park. Because there are pests that will try to use your pet as a host. Picnic area: There are tons of shelters scattered around the park that you can rent out for the day!! They all have their special quirks to them, but add to the magic of the park.
Beautiful stunning place to have a picnic, go for a walk, workout. It's breath taking view from the top of the slide thing. You can give roll in the grass if you are young at heart!!!highly recommend this greenery for picnic with friends and family.
A park that is worthy of a visit. This park has the most amazing view you will see in WNY. A clean and beautiful place for the family or just yourself. A great walking trail. The downside of the place for the last 2 times I went recently was the bathrooms were not available. Playground: Great playgrounds for all ages. Restrooms: When I went to visit, the bathrooms were not available to use. The first time it was locked with no reason as to why and the 2nd time, the sign indicated they were having issues with the pipes/water. Dog-friendliness: Great place to walk your dog. Picnic area: Great picnic areas. Because this place is visited by many it’s best to reserve a picnic area.
We had a family reunion to perform at on a Saturday. We wish that there were signs directing traffic to specific pavillions as it was extremely difficult to find the pavilion we were to get to. i.e., Turn left for #4-7 we were happy that the party brought a generator as there was no electricity in our pavilion. We were happy that the bathroom facility was close.
