Our Story:
Bronx Girl brings Asian dessert to the Pioneer Valley…Angie’s Story
I grew up in the Bronx, and did everything a typical Bronxnite will do. Going to Yankee games, visting the Bronx zoo, spending summers playing in an open fire hydrate to cool down from the stiffling New York Summer heat waves. Yet from as early as I can remember, I always wanted to go to Japan… I can’t remember a time when I didn’t. When I was 11, I shared with my Mom how much I wanted to see Japan. She looked at me and said, “Angie, you lived in Japan.” She proceeded to tell me that when my dad was in the military, we spent the first two years of my life in Japan! I was stunned… to be so drawn to the country when I didn’t even remember being there in the first place!
Fast forward more than 20 years, I was promoted into a job that required international travel. About a year into my new position, I fell in love and was ready to go back to working full-time in the US, when I discovered that Japan was one of the countries in our project scope. Screech – halt, wait a minute!! I told myself, “not so fast, you need to stay on this project.” Never did I think this Bronx girl was ever going to go back to Japan. So I waited and waited and waited for Japan. After 6 years, I had the opprounity to make several wonderful trips to Japan and was so thrilled.
During my last trip, on an almost 100-degree day, I decided to go to a traditional Japanese bathhouse. I thought, “What a crazy idea to visit a bathhouse on such a hot steamy day!” I almost turned back. In retrospect, I am so grateful that I didn’t. I enjoyed an incredible experience at the bathhouse, and as I turned back into the main building, something caught my eye. I had never seen anything like it before. It was a cool, refreshing dessert. Depending on the ingredients, it looked like strips of ribbon or like crushed ice. Unlike American “snow cones,” this dessert was infused with wonderful, delicate, natural flavors like mango, strawberry, and vanilla. I knew I’d never seen anything like this in the US and I believed this dessert could do well in the United States.
And so began my journey. Is this a coincidence, my longing to visit a country for so many years and then to find a delicate, melt-in-your-mouth dessert that was to become my inspiration for a new adventure? I think not. I think its East-meets-West. The rest is history!
WHAT WE'RE NOT - We’ve all been there. You're at an outdoor event or festival and looking for a cold treat to refresh yourself and your family from the heat. But the traditional snow cones and “icy drinks” leave you flat, with their “technicolor” syrups, artificial flavors, colors and high-fructose corn syrup. What if there was an all-natural option that would appeal to both kids and adults? There is – it’s Chill Out frozen desserts! We use only natural ingredients – milk, cream, pure chocolate, vanilla and fresh fruits. This is a frozen dessert you’ll be happy to give yourself and your family!
Community Outreach- The Chill out Food Truck is much more than a business. We believe in giving back to the community that we call home, and to support those organizations that are important to us.
For our charitable partner, Chill out has chosen to work with Cancer Connection, a Northampton-based non-profit organization that is dedicated to creating a warm, caring environment where vitality and good times are emphasized, rather than isolation and illness. Cancer Connection offers a haven for people with cancer, their families, friends and caregivers. Cancer Connection offers coping strategies, referrals and resources – all 100% free of charge – to help people in our communities navigate their changed lives and bodies, and the emotional turmoil created by a cancer diagnosis and course of treatment. Chill Out will donate 10% of our profits to Cancer Connection.
Hi! We're Angie & Kelli, owners of Chill Out! "Impressum" is a pretty fancy word, but since we don't need one, we'd like to use this space to tell you more about us, and the Chill Out Frozen Desserts Food Truck.
We make our home right here in the beautiful Pioneer Valley, with our two children. The Chill Out Food Truck business has been a dream of ours for years. We’re so excited to have found a way to support our family that's fun and entertaining, and allows us to stretch our entrepreneurial legs. We love engaging with people in festive, casual and creative environments. We love introducing individuals and families across the Pioneer Valley to an exciting new option in fresh frozen desserts. And we get to share our success by donating 10% of pre-tax profits to Cancer Connection (Northampton MA), and helping to create career pathways for young local entrepreneurs.
