Description

Imagine Cocky prancing around a wedding reception or a dramatic Tarleton Blackwell diptych painting (12 feet by 9 feet) or a mile of molding ready to be made into frames for art at the new Adesso Building. That’s what one might find at City Art between Gervais and Lady on Lincoln Street in the Congaree Vista.

Partners Wendyth Wells, Heather Noe and Randy Hanna have 75 combined years of experience as artists, entrepreneurs, framers, gallery consultants and art supply dealers. City Art is their home and a place where artists gather. In addition to a full-service framing department and the largest fine arts supply store in the state, the City Art building houses an award winning art gallery and rental space for wedding receptions, parties, and small trade shows.

Gallery Director Wendyth Wells supervises three separate gallery spaces and consults on projects as small as a single painting for an individual home to large corporate accounts like the new Adesso building on Main and Blossom and the Vista Bank. The gallery areas provide a unique backdrop for all kinds of rental needs and include Hootie and the Blow Fish as guests.

Yes, the framing department has worked on African tribal belts, buffalo hides, wedding dresses and even shot guns. And the most fun project? Framing designer Heather Noe says that’s an easy answer. “We designed a collage of memorabilia after soul singer James Brown was honored at Lincoln Center in Washington D.C.” Randy added, “We stretched and framed portraits of JFK and Bill Clinton to be used for the movie Nailed when it filmed here this spring.

College students, professional artists and those who paint for therapy or fun feel like a ‘kid in a candy store’ as they roam the aisles and peruse the large inventory in the lower level art supply store.

The newest component of the City Art family of services is Art Xpress – an on-line art supply service. Randy Hanna’s happiest day as the manager of this new service when he took an order for Charles Reid signature brushes from pop/jazz icon Tony Bennett.

City Art is by far the best gallery in the Columbia, SC area. They have a large selection of beautiful art, much of it by local artists. And they do an outstanding job with framing! I had a 25x36 wood print that just didn't quite look right. I took it to them to see what they could do with it. Heather stained the edges and Wendy recommended a narrow black frame. The print was transformed from "meh" to "wow!" I've also purchased some original art from them and had other framing done. Everyone in the gallery is friendly, knowledgeable, and talented. I highly recommend them.
Absolutely beautiful collection of Art, magical aesthetic inside and a great, well stocked art supplies store on the bottom level. Hands down, best in Columbia. There are two levels of art galleries above the store. Love this place. The owners are super nice.
was just walking around town and saw the art gallery a really nice lady there. They do have very interesting pieces of art here the main area when you come in is a loft open space like it
Love City Art! They usually have what I need - great selection of great quality supplies … paint, canvas unrolled & stretched, beautiful handmade papers for collaging or wrapping, and so much more. But best is the excellent customer service. Randy can answer questions, comes up with solutions or ideas I wouldn’t have thought of, and chat about arts in Columbia. Store is located in the art gallery, it’s always fun to see what’s showing when you go to shop. I think others are highlighting the gallery, so I wanted to focus on the store. Can also take great art classes at City Art. All around treasure.
I love to visit this store for my art supplies. The store owner, Randy, is very proficient and helpful. They are stocked well and I can always find what I need. A bonus is the beautiful architecture and art gallery both down-and upstairs, I'd love to see this venue thrive - it's a gem and so convenient - free parking too! .
I love going into City Art! There is always something new to examine and enjoy. They have something special for everyone, because they showcase a wide variety of artistic styles and creations. Their location in five Points is also a plus, and they provide a wonderful venue for events of all kinds. City Art is definitely a place that everyone needs to check out!!
From the exceptional art selections, custom framing, art supplies and the perfect venue for special events our wedding reception!, City Art is my favorite gallery in Columbia. The owners are always available to help with any and all art questions, recommendations and expertise. Have always been thrilled with all purchases and customer care. Highly recommend.
The art community is truly fortunate to have access to City Art. Their supply store is top notch as is their knowledgeable and helpful staff. While you are there, walk into the galleries to view a wonderful selection of two and three-D art. Go upstairs too. There is lots more artwork and workshop space where you can learn about making art in a variety of mediums. They offer an online shopping experience too!
Beautiful gallery WITH art supplies in the lower level extra bonus!. I was there with three friends and the owner gave us a guided tour, answered questions and invited us back when we were in the area again. Next time I'm in Columbia, SC I plan to visit the gallery to see the art in person. In the meantime, I'm enjoying their email updates.
Great gallery, rentable venue space and superior art supply store in the basement. The art supply store is the first "big" professional art store with quality art supplies I have ever been to as a young adult and frequent this shop for advice on the material itself and professional touches like how to pack fine art to ship and how to prepare surfaces for different treatments. This store is a wealth of knowledge and expertise. I am grateful it exists a mere hour from where I live. THANKS YALL!
