The discovery of gold in California (1848-1855) brought masses of people west, rapidly creating a demand for food. Part of that food was cattle, sugar beets, and hay, which Lynwood area farmers were known to produce. As commerce continued to grow, Lynwood began creating small business areas. One of the main businesses was the Lynwood dairy and creamery, from which the City’s name was derived.
The City of Lynwood was incorporated in 1921, and has kept its vision to build and maintain a safe, self-sufficient, and pride-filled community that provides access to recreational, educational, and economical opportunities to residents and businesses alike. Lynwood’s strength lies in its innovative programs and projects, departments strive to address pressing challenges that impacts the community.
