Trails were nice and easy to navigate, with varying levels of difficulty. The lake provided nice breeze, keeping us cool while hiking. Enjoying seeing few patches of bluebonnets, wildflowers and other signs of spring on the trail. The spillway was dry but still a beautiful sight to see. We hiked 50% of the trails there, due to time. Hope to come back and hike the other half.
The park is great! The trail is steps, and rocks but it is challenging and fun! The park also has many activities such camp, swimming, kayak, and paddle boarding!!! Highly recommend hanging out for a full day
This is a hidden gem of a state park! It is a wonderful place to tent camp & hike. Water & electric at camp sites. Dump station for trailors. The restrooms located on the loops & showers are in great need of an upgrade, but always clean. The park staff are very friendly & helpful. Camp sites were always clean upon arrival. The only negatives I have are no fault of the park itself. The near by lime plant often operates at night producing loud on going noise. And it sounded like hunters or a gun range near by at night around 10pm. A bit concerning the first time you hear it late! I was told the sound of near by gunfire is normal there. The hiking trails are gorgeous & well kept. A hike to the spillway is a must! The wildflowers this Spring were abundant & fragrant. This park has a small day use area with kids play area, swim area & lots of picnic tables in a shadey area. Also, there is a small fishing dock & small kayaks for rent. As well as a vending machine for firewood. Restrooms: The restrooms on the camp site loops were clean but were in great need of updating!
We only stayed one night. But it was very peaceful, clean, and fun. Dogs, people everywhere. No complaints there. Kids rode bikes and your neighbors were friendly. Only issue was it was 90 that day and the heaters were on in the bathrooms. They were like saunas. But that's not a deal breaker for us.
The swimming beach is perfect if you have small children because a very large area is shallow and you won't feel the need to be right on top of your children. Camping here is wonderful and peaceful. The trails are gorgeous. We have been several times and will continue to come here regularly.
Went in to hike. The trail up to the dam is nice, but maybe a bit steep for young kids. Nice cabins and screen shelters. Small but nice beach area with lots of shallow lake area. Two fishing piers. Use your tx state park pass or pay at the entrance. Many nice camp sites. The pic is from the covered fishing pier. Restrooms: Nice has showers. Picnic area: Many picnic tables. Some really close to parking. We had many houseflies visit us. Should have brought a swatter.
It’s a nice state park but the bathrooms are the main reason I give it 4 stars. There’s no windows to help circulate the hot air so right after taking a shower you’re back to sweating all over again. One of the shower stalls constantly runs water so there’s water on the bathroom floor and even inside the stall next to it.
Enjoyed our overnight stay at the screened shelter. Fairly quiet at night. Ran the Mammoth race the next morning. Nice trail although not much in the way of views. Bluebonnets were coming out and the weather was nice. Only drawback to the shelters is there is no nearby restrooms.
We did a 7m hike early on a Sat morning. Check-in was easy, we have a Texas State Parks pass, which made it easy to check in online. The trails were in excellent condition with great views and a balance of easy, moderate, and challenging throughout. Restrooms: The bathrooms were immaculately clean and supplied.
Great park that is barely an hour outside of Dallas. They have lots of trails to explore, both bike and hiking. I can't wait to come back with my bike. If you care, you won't have phone signal. The screened shelter sites are a little close to each other and on the sites themselves are a little small but they are adequate. I enjoyed my weekend trip with family. We reserved screen shelter 6 which is by far the largest site and is completely covered by trees. Perfect site for the Texas heat. Only downside is the bathrooms are bit far. If you're up for the walk, it's not too bad. The door to the shelter is actually facing away from the tent/grill site, so if you intend on using the power outlet you will need to bring a very long extension cord. Great site and probably the only site with some privacy. The lake has unmanned "vending machine" kayaks which can be rented from 7am - 7pm. Very easy process and the cost is $24 for 2hrs. Both single and tandem kayaks are available. Paddles and life jackets are released from lockers once paid. Return to the same spot. Firewood is also available from vending machines. Large for $12.99. I love the easy of use and accessibility for both the kayaks and the firewood. The beach area is very large and there is also a pavilionrentalable and large park across the parking lot. There are several tables and grills at the beach area. Restrooms: The only downside to this park is the bathrooms. I don't expect a lot from state park bathrooms, but these were very small and perhaps a little dirty. If I remember correctly there were two shower sites. The one I went to had only two showers, with the shower heads being fixed to the walls, and unmovableside/side, up/down. The shower itself seemed like it was level with the changing area, with no lip so the water spilled over to the changing area. The changing areas do not have a drain so the area would flood by the time you were done. On the positive side, the water was very hot!
