Clermont State Historic Site

Description

The Clermont State Historic Site, also known as the Clermont estate, the Clermont Manor or just Clermont, is a New York State Historic Site in southwestern Columbia County, New York, United States. It protects the former estate of the Livingston family, seven generations of whom lived on the site over more than two centuries.HistoryThe name Clermont derives from "clear mountain" in French and was inspired by the view of the Catskill Mountains across the Hudson River from the estate. The estate was established by Robert Livingston following the death of his father, the first Lord of Livingston Manor, in 1728; while most of the manor was inherited by the eldest son Philip Livingston, in the southwest corner, later named Clermont, was willed to Robert. The original house was built about 1740.Robert Livingston of Clermont died on June 27, 1775 and the estate passed to his son, Robert, who was known as 'Judge Livingston' to distinguish him from his father. Judge Livingston was a member of the New York Provincial Assembly from 1759 to 1768, served as judge of the admiralty court from 1760 to 1763 and was a delegate to the Stamp Act Congress of 1765. He married Margaret Beekman, daughter of Colonel Henry Beekman. Their son, Robert R. Livingston, later known as "Chancellor", served on the committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence. Judge Robert died about six months after his father, on December 9, 1775.

This place has absolutely everything you need to escape from the city. The history and amazing view on Hudson and Catskills. Place for barbecue and gardens for reading. The trail for your dog and benches for birds rabbits watching.
Clermont State Historic Site is a nice historic site that offers very much. If planning to visit the mansion offers a tour that you can take. There are also nice walking trails and you can walk the grounds of the estate, which has nice gardens. The views of the Hudson River and Catskills from here are some of the best in the area. The mansion tour is about 45 minutes long. It goes over Clermont's history primarily in the Gilded Age. Most of the furniture and decorations reflect this era. The library is probably the best room in the house. The view from the porch originally the front of the house is serene. This viewpoint is also how the house got it's name Clermont, meaning "clear mountain." The paintings in the house of different Livingston family members are also unique. The tour guide was very good and knew the information about the house very well. Claremont was originally established in the 1700's by Robert Livingston, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The ruins of another mansion are also found on the property. The visitor center does a good job describing the historical importance of the Livingston's to US history. The first commercially successful steamboat created in the US was named after the estate. The nature trails around the estate are very good and Clermont is a nice place to enjoy a walk. They offer some nice views of the Hudson and views of the gardens around the mansion. You can also picnic at the estate and there are many picnic benches and grills available. Altogether, a great historic site and park!
Clermont State Historic Site is one of my favorite places to hike. Walks on the trails through the woods are peaceful, the river trail views area great, and the gardens are lovely and well-kept.

This is an amazing often overlooked gem along the Hudson river. this is a fantastic place to stroll, hike, or have a leisurely picnic with amazing views. The overlook looking towards the Hudson and distant Catskill mountains must be one of the most beautiful vistas in the entire country. Although there is a $5 parking fee close to the historic home, you can also park near the entrance of the state park and hike down towards the river.
Lots of fun memories here. Had to share with my daughter.
Nice walking trails. Would be great to xcountry ski on. Attended a talk "all my boyfriends are dead", which was very interesting and well done!
