Amazing battlefield location with incredibly preserved trenches. The walking trails were easy to navigate and gave wonderful insight to the events that took place here.
Lots of interpretive signs as you walk around the perimeter of the battlefield. Small parking lot with a port-a-potty outside the visitor center.
This is a very historical place. It was too bad the ranger/guide seemed defensive if not dismissive about the Southern victory won here.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
It’s really amazing to get to walk through history. The field is well kept up. The walking trail is very nice and you can always drive through parts of the park.
Quiet, peacful site. Unfortunate that such small portion of the battlefield is preserved. So much death in such a short period. So senseless. The short auto tour is informative & worth the time. A memorable & emotional experience as my GG grandfather fought in & survived this battle with the 126th Ohio Inf.
A must see for all civil war fans. There is a very nice trail that can be taken that accesses all of the different battle sites. There is also a road around the battlefields that allows those who choose to drive. There is parking in front of each marked site. The visitor center is small but there are bathrooms and it also serves as a storm shelter. Plenty of parking at the visitors center as well. A good place to let the dogs out.
Great walking trail. Informative placards as you go. Stop in at the beginning of June to see the battle of cold harbor anniversary event. They have reenactment type canon and musket fire, period clothing and food displays, and walking tours. Great for kids and adults alike.
Cold Harbor is a civil war battlefield that its estimated 5,000 Confederate troops and 13,000 Union troops died. GRANT called the 3 attack he ordered the biggest mistake he made. 5000 Union troops were killed in 30 minutes. Now the area is a park with foot trails, displays and quiet solitude except for the ghosts of the battles. On the road trail you will see Confederate and Union trenches and battlements. The photos are of the park as you drive through. The park visitors center was closed because of the cronovirus.
It is always enjoyable walking the paths of the Cold Harbor Battlefield. The NPS does a great job in preserving the history of those place, while making it a park for everyone to enjoy. The paths take you past the man-made earthworks from that battle and signs tell you of the risks, the fights and the efforts of the combatants on both sides. I got lucky and in early June the re-enacters set up their tents commemorating the anniversary of the battle.
Cold Harbor Battlefield Walk - Social Isolation does not have to be the same as quarantine. The Battlefields around Richmond are grossly under appreciated and very walkable. We walked over 3 miles and rarely saw anyone else especially on the wooded portions of the trails. These photos are all on the Confederate side of the battlefield which compared to many is still very small. The visitors center and restrooms are closed but the interpretive signs are all all open.
