The Community
Dobbs Ferry is an incorporated village located on the eastern bank of the Hudson River, about 20 miles north of Manhattan. Proximity to the Hudson River has been a major influence on the village's history. Dobbs Ferry takes its name from the Dobbs family, who in the early 1700's started a ferry that provided the first passage across the Hudson River. In the 19th century, the tourists christened the area "the heart of the American Rhine" for the spectacular views and Rhenish-style castles.
Dobbs Ferry has a population of approximately 11,000 within its 2.5 square mile area. Many of its shopkeepers, tradespeople and professionals live locally. It is a community distinguished, however, by bearing a closer resemblance to a small hometown rather than a community suburb. It is a true community, rich in history and architecture.
The Educational and Cultural Facilities
The Dobbs Ferry Union Free School District has a superb record of achievement and offers the International Baccalaureate Program. Private schools located within the town include the Masters School for grades 5 through 12 and the 68-acre Mercy College.
The Recreational Facilities
Peerless parks include the scenic 8.5 acre Waterfront Park on the Hudson, the 70-acre Juhring Estate Nature Preserve, and the 8-acre Gould Park with its ball fields and pool. The Embassy Community Center offers programs for all ages.
The Transportation
In thirty-eight minutes, commuters enjoy views of the Palisades as they take the Metro North line to Grand Central Station . An extensive network of Westchester County parkways and the NYS Thruway bring every destination within easy reach.
