College Grove Center (Marketplace at The Grove)

About

San Diego's first regional shopping center.

Description

Opened in July 1960, College Grove Center was the first shopping mall in San Diego and one of the first in the United States. Encompassing roughly 635,000 leasable square feet it was initially anchored by the largest Walker Scott store in the county, along with a J.C. Penney and J.J. Newberry. In the late 1980's the mall was given a major renovation and renamed Marketplace at The Grove. The renovation added the Mann 9 Theaters in the place of the Walker Scott and The Grove Bowling alley, among other notable anchors. The mall underwent another, more massive, renovation in 1999 that saw everything between the (then) Longs Drugs store and the (then) Grove bowling alley demolished and rebuilt. Wal Mart was added as a major anchor along with Sam’s Club, which took over the area occupied by the Mann 9 Theaters. The center was also given back its original name, College Grove Center, as a part of the renovations.

I LOVE the curbside pickup! I HATE when in store shoppers park in the pick up spots! There's only 8 spots! R u people so LAZY that you can't find a spot in the HUGE parking lot?
Love to go and buy their ready made trays, saves so much cooking time Always fresh and feeds several people or makes several meals if your omly person in hiusehold.
Newly Remodeled, fresh merchandise, new leadership. This store is making better decisions; helping it to be a key hub in this community. No longer will this neighborhood be ignored by merchants the size of Wal-Mart, Kroger, Target and others.
It's very congested with traffic and pedestrians out in front of Wal-Mart. You have people parking/stopping to unload/load passengers in traffic lanes. Hard to go around them. They should not be doing it there. It's the only Wal-Mart I know of that needs an armed security guard standing out front of the store during business hours! I remember when Walker Scott store and Orange Julius were there, and you parked under the stores. Kind of like underground parking. 1960-1970s. It was called College Grove shopping center. Another reviewer here mentioned the light up sign of a girl with baton. That used to be at the entrance of the College Drive-In Theater up on El Cajon Blvd. and College Avenue. It's a cheerleader neon sign that the public voted it to be saved as an iconic history piece when the drive-in was torn down. It was decided to be placed at this shopping mall rather than destroyed. Probably made in late 1950 to early 60s.
They told me only AT&T store can give me my no charge upgrade.
It's definitely the same but different than Neighborhood Markets in other states. You pay 10 cents a bag and a 10 cent fee for items that are plastic or aluminum. Otherwise, prices were pretty comparable, which was shocking for me. I heard stories about items costing more, but that was simply not the case.
Went to get prescription sunglasses and they were very efficient and very helpful. The process was quick and easy. My prescription sunglasses came in within the time frame they stated.
Quick checkout and they had Lipton iced tea mix in stock and having a McDonald's inside is pretty convenient.
Plaza attracts interesting traffic but can't beat the sams club
They had everything I was looking for and I even got extra stuff. I went there during the hurricane to get supplies at the only thing they were out of was flashlight
