Description

Greg Walley, the director of Colonial Funeral Homes has been working in Leesburg for more than a decade. You also want people who are passionate and compassionate.

He has been in the business for almost 30 years, and has known he wanted to be a funeral director since high school.

Earlier this summer Greg Walley and his, wife, Suzanne, bought out former partners Jim and Connie Clem.

In a county booming with cookie cutter homes and strip malls, the Walleys want to run a family business in one of the few industries left where it seems like it should be the normal business model.

Maybe it’s the 1940s Packard hearse that sits in front of Colonial Funeral Home on East Market Street in downtown Leesburg or the fact that the funeral home looks like a home. Maybe it’s the name – Colonial – but the place is set up to feel like maybe your grandfather's place, or maybe a great uncle.

"It's really not a corporation," said Suzanne Walley. A trait the couple believe is important.

The business of death is being commodified now, but in a $17 billion industry the Walleys want their funeral home to feel more mom and pop and less like a Costco.

So Greg Walley's brother Darrell, a licensed funeral home director, works at the funeral home; his middle son, Chad, is an intern; his oldest son, Ryan, is studying mortuary sciences where his father did almost 30 years ago; and his wife works together with him every day.

The lone question mark is the youngest son, Taylor.

"My youngest is, what's he? Kinda undecided," Greg Walley said.

It was after attending a career day presentation as a student at Edison High School in Alexandria that Greg Walley decided to pursue being a funeral director. He was given the chance to sit in on speeches and hear about professions he might want to pursue after high school.

One such speech was given by the local funeral home director at DeMaine Funeral Home.

"I went ahead and attended that class, mainly out of curiosity," he said. "And something just struck with me then."

A few months later, he was married to high school sweetheart Suzanne and the couple were off to Atlanta, where he enrolled at Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Sciences.

For a few years Suzanne Walley supported her husband while he was a student at Gupton-Jones. She worked for the Department of Defense at McPherson Army Base in East Point, Ga. just outside Atlanta.

The couple says that it was always a hope for them that they would go into business together, something that just came to fruition on a full-time basis just two years ago, once their kids became older and Suzanne Walley began working full time.

The Colonial Funeral Home opened its doors originally in 1877 in what is today the Loudoun Museum at the corner of Wirt and Loudoun streets.

In the past 136 years, the funeral home has changed hands only about a half dozen times. The most recent being only a month-and-a-half ago.

As for the future, the Walleys hope the business can stay in the family and continue the same way it has for the last 136 years.

I cannot say enough about how perfect everyone was in putting together the service for our brother Randall Curtis Westbrook today. From the moment we walked in initially to meet with them until the moment we left today we were handled with care, genuineness, professionalism, compassion, gentleness, and yes, love. Everything was so easy, everything was taken care of, they treated us all with love and respect. In a difficult time they made it easy for us to put together this goodbye to our brother Randy. They also made it affordable but did not skimp and we did not feel any of it was cheap. I have been involved with many companies and have been to a few funerals and this was by far my absolute favorite experience! They have taken care of two other family members in the past and that is why we were referred to them. Darrell at the helm made us feel listened to and cared for. He shared personal stories that made us realize we were in the hands of somebody who truly cared. I also want to praise Ryan because he made my brother look so calm, peaceful and real. It looked like Randy could wake up any moment and just say I changed my mind. Thank you Ryan for making our brother look exactly as he was . Everyone was wonderful, all of the help all of the extra people. I can't remember everybody's names, but I also want to say thank you to Suzanne and Jeanette especially for helping take care of emails and putting things on the website and answering our questions and guiding us. I hope if I need to in the future, I will be able to utilize this wonderful place, because the caring we received is something that I will always treasure and appreciate!
Suzanne and her team were wonderful in our unexpected tragedy. My husband and I are from Ohio, but we were visiting our daughter and son-in-law in Virginia when my husband was hospitalized. He shockingly never recovered, and Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg was recommended to us by the funeral home in our hometown. Suzanne stayed in constant communication, and she understood our unique situation of needing to wrap things up in Virginia and get back to Ohio for the service. Suzanne was friendly and empathetic, and her team was efficient, reasonably priced, and delivered everything we needed. It was perfect, and just made our lives a little easier while dealing with our tragedy. Thank you, Suzanne!
While I never wanted to imagine the day I would need funeral home services, Darrell was really a shining light that made this part of the process really smooth. He was very patient and understanding with all my questions, which sometimes were repeat questions I had forgotten I already asked. Having to go through the death of my mom is the hardest thing I’ve had to experience, and I’m glad that I could trust Colonial Funeral Home in helping with this part. Darrell followed up almost daily and checked in with me, which I really appreciated, and recommend an autopsy doctor as well. It was nice I didn’t have to research that on my own. I briefly interacted with the rest of the ladies on the team, and they were just as kind and understanding.
We are so thankful for Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg! In a very difficult time, they eliminated all of the stress involved in having our loved one cremated. Their prices were considerably cheaper than other local funeral homes. They went above and beyond when we requested a change in the urn that we had originally ordered. Suzanne was so kind and helpful! We would highly recommend Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg!
We used their online process to prepare a plan in the event of my mother death. When the time came, their staff were professional, compassionate and thorough with constant communication. Received all the documentation including Death Certificate and Cremation Certificate. Thank you Suzanne for all your help.
Dad past away and the owner treated us and my dad with the most respect possible, he went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable, he even arranged everything for us. We are really glad to have chosen colonial funeral home...
Greg was wonderful to work with. He provided difficult information in a compassionate manner and provided options for in person or online decisions.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate how easy Colonial Funeral Home made this process for me. I didn't live in the same area and they helped me with scheduling the cremation. Gary, who is amazing, was so kind and thoughtful every time we spoke. Their service is excellent. They really consider how difficult this is for customers and do everything possible to make it a little bit easier. I highly recommend.
The staff at Colonial Funeral Home were the most sincere with all of their interactions with me over the cremation process of my dear husband, Rick. They handled him with the utmost care. I would recommend them and their services to anyone who has lost a loved one.
We are very impressed with Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg during our time of grieving. As my father was suddenly in hospice, we had no idea who to use. Colonial was researched by our family and when the sad day came, they allowed us to prepare our dad for his final journey. The sons of the owner came to pick Dad up and were very respectful as we said our final goodbyes. Everything from that point on was handled via email. The obituary and death certificates were done in a very timely manner and they personally delivered his ashes to the house 8 days after he left us. Their pricing is extremely reasonable, the entire team is sympathetic and respectful.
