Columbia University's Global mental health program is an organization based in New York. We champion better mental health worldwide through innovative research, education and advocacy.
Mental illness represents the leading cause of disability around the globe. With this growing recognition, the pressure to do something is gaining, but if we are going to make progress, we need to build programs that have real impact. The Global Mental Health Program at Columbia is committed to conducting research, providing education and training to health professionals, and advocating for better mental health in order to guide global efforts to reduce the burden of disease.
For current and future students at Columbia: Individuals interested in increasing their knowledge of research, intervention, advocacy and policy related to advancing the Global Mental Health agenda, will be afforded the opportunity to partner with university and international faculty with diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise through an exciting array of inter-disciplinary courses and internships. The program’s research initiatives and collaborations are active around the world, including in Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, China, India, Pakistan, and Australasia, among other regions.
We ENVISION a world in which mental illness loses its stigma and is recognized as a serious global issue that has an impact on all of us—economically, politically, and socially—whether or not our families or we are directly affected.
We ENVISION a world in which effective prevention and treatment interventions are available and accessible in all societies.
We STRIVE to be a world leader in education, research, training and advocacy in global mental health.
We are on a MISSION to promote mental health and reduce the burden of mental illness around the globe by:
