Columbus-Belmont State Park

Description

Columbus-Belmont State Park, on the shores of the Mississippi River in Hickman County, near Columbus, Kentucky, is the site of a Confederate fortification built during the American Civil War. The site was considered by both North and South to be strategically significant in gaining and keeping control of the Mississippi River.HistoryConfederate General Leonidas Polk fortified the area now occupied by the park beginning September 3, 1861. The fort at Columbus was built upon a bluff along the "cutside" of the river. The fort was christened Fort DeRussey, but Polk referred it as the "Gibraltar of the West". He had equipped it with a massive chain that was stretched across the Mississippi to Belmont, Missouri, to block the passage of Union gunboats and supply vessels to and from Southern destinations in the western theaters of the war. Equipped also with 143 cannons, Columbus was the Northern-most Confederate base along the Mississippi, protecting Memphis, Vicksburg, and other key Southern holdings. As the northern terminus of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, Columbus was logistically tied to Confederate supply lines.

"Columbus-Belmont is part of the Kentucky Great River Road, where you'll find exciting events and happenings in the four KY counties bordering the Mississippi River. Excellent clean park! Grassy, shady tree-filled park. Blacktopped. Full hookups, laundry, showers. Overlooking the Mississippi River. COE needs to trim along the banks for a better water view. It is an old fort too, so historic views, overlooks, playground, picnic areas, shelter houses, historic museum to tour, all just a short jaunt up a nice paved road or on the blacktop trail provided. Fire rings provided. Good place for walking around the park area safely.
Just came to check out the park for a future visit. Campground was largely inaccessible due to paving; no buildings open on a Tuesday in early March. The view from the bluffs was fabulous and we will likely return.
Wonderful little campground! Right on the Mississippi river overlooking Missouri. Clean spaces, friendly camp host. The actual park is very nice as well. Lots of civil war memorabilia, a museum and a playground. Clean and nice! Museum is very neat as well.
What a day with family...the park was clean...great ice cream and good food...will be back!
This is one of the most beautiful and well kept parks we have ever been too. The landscape is well maintained while the camping spots are paved with an adjacent gravel spot that has a picnic table and fire pit. We was in site 31 and had a beautiful view of the Mississippi River. The nearby park is just a gorgeous and has a lost of historic information along the paved walking paths. You are about a hour away from Sikeston, MO where Lambert’s Cafe is and 30 minutes from Union City, TN where Discovery Park of America is located. If you are in the area camping this is where you need to be.
Lots of history around this place. Nice park and small Civil War museum. Campground is nice, with plenty of room at each site. Mostly 30A with water, but some premium sites with full hookups and 50A. My only complaint is most premium sites are very unlevel, OK for trailers, but difficult for most motor homes.
One of my most favorite parks to go to. Very hilly fair warning. The encampment is always a great time. October every year. Highly recommend going to it. Great view of the river.
The quietest and most relaxing campground we have ever been to. The park and campground were well manicured and clean. Friendly host and campers. Nice shower facilities and restrooms. Great views of the Mississippi
Went to watch the sunset and fell in love with the park. It's beautiful there! Check out these pictures!
Beautiful state park. The grounds are well cared for and the view of the river and Missouri is fantastic especially from the gazebo and benches that line the top of the bluffs. There is a small museum inside a historic house with friendly curators/guides and a small snack shack with a good variety of treats including corndogs and ice cream sundaes. There are multiple shaded picnic areas, benches for sittings, and a playground. Really nice area. I would visit them again if ever passing through.
