A 1 mile 15" gauge railroad with 4 trestles,1 tunnel & the picnic grove.
The Commanche Crossing & Eastern is a 15" gauge hobby railroad started by Virgil Uhrich and his family in the summer of 1975. Through the years, over a mile of track with sidings, 4 trestles and a tunnel have been constructed. A three-stall engine house and gallows turntable are currently under construction. Motive power includes steam, diesel, and electric locomotives.
There are 2 lines: the "High line" on a grueling 3% grade runs point to loop past Rob and Joane (Uhrich) Thain's home (which has been converted from a Rock Island Railroad depot); and the nearly completed "loop line" that runs past the picnic grove.
The CC&E does not have normal operating hours. Marlin Uhrich, family & friends can often be found working on the railroad on Saturday mornings through the summer, so if you happen to be in the neighborhood then, stop by and we will take you for a ride -- maybe even let you drive a few spikes. With advance arrangement we can accommodate groups for a reasonable fee. Call if interested. interesedand
