Friendly and work completed in time quoted BUT disappointed in quality of workmanship. I brought in 3 wool blankets to have the satin edges replaced. The stitching was crooked and uneven in places for all 3 blankets. The corner edges were not straight either and had some gaps. I assumed this was an easy job but I should’ve asked if they’d done it before.
I had to have a suit modified within a 24 hour timeframe and they did it with ease. I was very happy with the service here. I was in a pinch and they came through. I thought the pricing was reasonable, especially considering the turnaround time.
I was shocked at the prices when I went to drop off a nightgown to hem. Nothing fancy, a straight hem. I happened to ask the cost just after she wrote up the ticket and she told me 28.00, maybe more because it was an A-Line gown and it's 'a lot'. I took the item back and left. Have the gown being hemmed for 12.00 at Village Gifts in Jericho. Great tailor there, don't let the kid toys fool you. There's a very gifted seamtress there.
I dropped an item off to be tailored and they assured me they knew how to do it. However, a week later they called me and said they didn't know how to do it so I had to bring in an example. On that day, I also brought in a jacket and a button that had fallen off, for which they charged me $15 to reattach the button. I am dissatisfied with their tailoring and their customer service and will not be returning.
I am a bridesmaid in a wedding. One week before the wedding, I tried on my dress and according to my mom it would not zip. I was aware that I had to get the straps shortened, however, I did not plan on any other alterations. That was what brought me to the Sewing Basket in Essex last Thursday. I was freaking out with the wedding being so close and I was concerned that they could not let the dress out at all due to its construction. I called the store before showing up, and the woman I talked to was very pleasant and said to bring in the dress; she checked with another worker to confirm they could meet my timeframe I wanted to pick it up by 9am the following Wednesday. I arrived at the store and the woman immediately pulled the dress up to look at the bodice. She said there was nothing they could do to get several inches what I thought I needed due to the construction of the dress. She called the owner, Judy, in Barre to see if there was anything she could do. The owner wanted me to try on the dress first before deciding anything. To my ultimate joy, I put on the dress, the woman hooked the top of the dress and zipped it up. The bodice was admittedly tight, but it zipped. She pinned the straps and told me that they could probably get an inch or so out of the dress to make me more comfortable. Before I walked out, I asked her to give me an estimate I was willing to pay whatever because I needed the dress altered regardless. She broke down costs of the straps, letting the dress out and then the rush charge; she estimated the straps to be between $20 and $25. She said it would be ready after 4pm on Tuesday. I walked out of the store and did not hear from them until about 11:30am on Monday - 28 hours before my dress was supposed to be complete. I was busy, so they left a message. The woman who left the message was different from the woman I saw in the store the week prior. Her message, in summary: "The estimate given for the straps is very low - it will be $40 - and there is no way for me to let the dress out. Do you still want the straps done?" I called back right away. I asked her why I was receiving this call 28 hours before my dress was supposed to be done. She responded with, "I don't work Thursday or Friday." I did not blame them for the construction of the dress, there was nothing they could do. The bottom line being, this was a rush order something I pay for and no one looked at my dress until the day before it was to be picked up when they "discovered" there was a problem, not mention they were going to charge me more for the service they could do straps. I was essentially promised something could be done letting the dress out after a worker LOOKED at my dress and then 28 hours before, I was told it wasn't possible. I told them to do the straps because the wedding was Friday. Flash forward to Wednesday morning I was not able to pick it up after 4pm on Tuesday when my mom picked up my dress: She expressed her disappointment and frustration with the service we received. The Sewing Basket's defense was once again, "We called your daughter." They claimed that the owner had reviewed my order and decided that the original estimate was too low – explaining the hiked $40 cost. Without an apology or any offer to stick to the original estimate, my mom paid the full cost after becoming exasperated at the entire situation. My mom left and then returned moments later to ask for the owner's information. She called the owner and left a message. The owner called my mom back saying she had another call; with what turned out to be the Sewing Basket. Once again, my mom detailed our experience and the many problems. The owner had NOT reviewed my order and did NOT tell the Sewing Basket to charge me $40, which was why the Sewing Basket called the owner as soon as my mom asked for that information. Ultimately, there was no apology or accountability. I am incredibly disappointed. A business that has been around for as long as the Sewing Basket should not have these problems nor treat their customers this way.
I'd like to share OUR experience with Sewing Basket. I went there to get a new zipper for my husband's shorts. Normally, things like this I fix myself as a lot of women of my generation still do, but a few months ago I hurt my left hand and now being one-handed I just had to ask for a "professional " help happened to be VERY UNprofessional So, I went to Sewing Basket because it conveniently locates almost around the corner from our place. They told me I should stop by in a WEEK !!! and shorts will be ready for $30 !!!!!!!????????!!!. But I didn't get'em not in a week nor 2 weeks. I didn't get'em for a MONTH. On my 1st "stop by" they told me the shorts are not ready. On the 2nd " stop by" they picked up a wrong zipper pale yellow for dark- almost black-shorts. Then they said they will call us when they are done but they never did. I asked my husband to give'em a call because I was so sick an tired dealing with that place and those people again and again and finally he was able to pick up his shorts ....a month later. And guess what? They didn't give him ANY explanation why this simple 30 minute job took'em 4 weeks and they even didn't give him any apology for doing such a crappy business. My advise: do not EVER go to Sewing Basket on Pearl St. in Essex VT if you want your things to be done properly, on time and if as a customer you do not want to feel so poorly and very much ignored. Can't even RATE this place. I had to give 1 star rating because unfortunately there is no NEGATIVE star rating system then it would be MINUS 5 stars. Shame on you people to treat your customers the way you treat'em. Mrs. R. Clarke
The people that work are tremendous. They're friendly and very helpful. I brought a suit in to get adjusted, and their craftswomanship is exceptional. This is now my go-to for alterations.
The woman working there was very rude, did not clean one of the dresses I asked to have cleaned, forgot to give back one of the articles I dropped off to have cleaned, and charged $90 to take an inch off 2 dresses. Will never go back
I have been getting alterations for past 11 years each time i need something altered have always done a good job thanks sewing basket
I've now used both this location and the Barre location for alterations. Work was done well ad the employees are always friendly.
