I was in this area yesterday Canvassing. I stopped by to Rest awhile and possibly use the Restroom. I rung the First Bell I saw because Lights were on and Cars were parked. No one answered. I then followed the Signs to the Main Entrance. I again rung the Bell to no answer. I sat on the Bench maybe 2mins before a Woman exiting asks May I help you. And another Black man wearing a Tank Top followed behind her. I asked to use the Bathroom and said Shalom and got no response from either person. I got to the Bathroom and while in the Stall noticed the Black man came in multiple times...after 5mins rushes me out. I then greeted him again Shalom but am disgusted with that man and would never want to go to this place again.
My wife and I joined Beth Am Israel in 2019. I had been looking for some time for a thriving community of prayer and worship, with well-attended Shabbat services and minyanim that offered the best of traditional prayers and ritual alongside modern religious thought and practice. I found it here - and so much more! This is a warm and deeply supportive community of neighbors who look out for one another - and for the wider community and world, with an extraordinary commitment to social justice and community service. I would especially encourage people who haven't been to Beth Am to come for a Friday evening service. It's a musical and spiritual experience that will give you the real feel of Shabbat, and totally make your week. Whatever makes Jewish life meaningful for you, if you haven't found a synagogue that brings it to life, visit Beth Am. I think you may find what you are looking for too.
Our son, David, is the Rabbi of Beth Am Israel. Even though we live in NYC we became members of BAI to be supportive. We never anticipated the benefits we would receive. This is a warm, friendly congregation filled with spiritual, intellectual people of all ages. There is always a moving service, an event, a lecture, an interfaith program, music, a picnic, a hike--something for all ages and interests. The programs for kids are phenomenal and fun. Well worth the commute for us, whether by Zoom, Livestream or in person. Join us!!
We have been members at Beth Am Israel for many years. In a community with many synagogues, Beth Am stands out for its warm, inclusive, diverse, and creative soul. Our Rabbi, Cantor and staff are fantastic and have gone the extra mile during the pandemic to help make sure that we all feel safe and connected even while socially distant. Beth Am is truly a family. Highly recommend our wonderful community!
We have been members of Beth Am Israel for almost 10 years. We joined because of the beautiful sanctuary space, the warm welcome we received, and the services full of spirited and spiritual singing. We have stayed because of the wonderful sense of community, the amazing rabbi and hazzan, the deep sense of spirituality, the dedication to inclusion, social justice, and tikkun olam, and the close friendships that we have formed. BAI is truly a special place.
We have been members of BAI for many years, and we have remained members for one simple reason - great people and a great sense of community! We have met so many wonderful people thanks to BAI and have developed long term friendships as a result. It is a warm, friendly congregation which promotes wonderful values. The staff have been extremely creative during this pandemic to find ways to continue engaging everyone in meaningful and enjoyable ways.
Beth Am Israel is a wonderful community that provides loving support and caring to all of its members. We are a vibrant congregation with something for everyone, no matter what your level of observance might be. Come check us out!
I have belonged to many conservativ synagogues in my life and BAI is by far the warmest, and most spiritual place. The leadership and community are just always there, in good times and bad. My husband passed away last year after a 5 year struggle with colon cancer and BAI was supportive, caring and funny important!. They were there every step of the way. My husband loved the shul and its awesome and engaging and creative environment. The leadership is lovely and accessible. Cannot recommend highly enough.
BAI has always been a place where, in Abraham Joshua Heschel's intentions, tradition has a vote but not a veto. So, BAI feels both traditional and homey, as well as expansive, flexible, interesting, and inclusive. It has been a place to pass on historical memory, rituals, and ethical behaviors from our Jewish cultural traditions. It allies with other synagogues and churches for social justice, singing and friendship. Beautiful place!!
Beth Am Israel is a welcoming and engaging conservative congregation. The Staff and Clergy are wonderful people intent on making new-comers feel as "part of the family". Services are spiritual and relaxed with extensive use of music. Highly recommended.
