My husband and I joined this synagogue almost 5 years ago. I grew up in this area so developing new friendships was not a priority in choosing a synagogue. What differentiates this synagogue from others for us is the openness, warmth and inclusiveness of its members. The Sisterhood is exceptional! Our members continually cultivate true friendships and enjoy participating together in a wide range of activities.
We found B'nai Tzedek 9 years ago when we moved from New York City. We originally intended to only use it as a preschool, but we found a vibrant, warm and welcoming community with lots of young families, fabulous programs, and more. B'nai Tzedek is not as enormous as some of the synagogues in our area--the experience is more personal and you really feel a sense of community. All four of our kids went to preschool at B'nai Tzedek and our oldest child had his Bar Mitzvah last weekend. The children all look forward to Sunday School--the program is hands-on and really fun. Children even choose their own "chug" activity, ie, art, Jews in sports, etc. for part of the morning. Rabbi Weinblatt is top-notch and a leader in the Washington Jewish community. My husband and I both grew up in Reformed congregations but we feel at home at B'nai Tzedek, the rabbi is welcoming of all backgrounds.
A warm and welcoming synagogue! The Hebrew School/Sunday School offers flexible days and has been very accommodating to our schedules. Love the opportunities the children have to become part of the Friday night service, too.
I've been a member for a long time and I highly recommend B'nai Tzedek. It's conservative how I grew up without being overly stuffy. The Rabbi and Cantor go a long way to make services and learning accessible, enjoyable and creative. I love the programming gospel Shabbat is a must and afternoon discussion on Yom Kippur is one of my favorites. Wonderful people, warm, welcoming and supportive in times of need.
This has been a home away from home from when we first moved to Potomac and knew no one. Almost 20 years later and a move into DC, we continue to belong and engage with the congregation that has meant so much to our family from preschool, a conversion, religious school through confirmation and now as nearly empty nesters.
The preschool has only become better over the years with many specialty teachers and interesting enrichment options for an extended day.
