Cool Crest Miniature Golf in San Antonio, Texas is one of the oldest continuously operated miniature golf courses in the world.

Miniature golf players, circa 1930. The earliest records of Cool Crest’s existence, according to city researchers, suggest that the golf course initially opened its doors for business in 1929 just as the country’s first Great Depression began. That period between 1929 – 1930 also marked the onset of a miniature golf craze that swept the United States the following decade. The city of San Antonio itself boasted of having no fewer than a dozen miniature golf courses, mostly scattered around the downtown metro area.

Harold Metzger, a retired trucker, and his wife Maria leased the property from the original owners in 1937. At that time, there was only one 18-hole course on the property, built mostly of wooden rails lining its fairways, and the Metzgers quickly went The 4th hole on the New Courseto work refurbishing the course. No doubt due in part to its expertly terraced setting on a gently sloping hillside, and the lush tropical landscaping and stylish Art Deco look the Metzgers gave it, Cool Crest quickly became one of the city’s most popular recreational venues, hosting many a party attended by the city’s social elite.

In 1959, the Metzgers re-engineered the original 18-hole course that runs alongside Fredericksburg Road. Now using concrete as its structural foundation, the business was also expanded at the same time with the addition of a second 18-hole course.

After her own demise in 2010, the Metzger estate sold the business in early 2013 to the Andry family, life-long San Antonio residents who wanted to restore the golf course to its original beauty and place as one of the city’s most cherished and family-friendly entertainment destinations.

Recognizing its rich history and cultural significance, San Antonio’s Historic and Design Commission voted in 2009 to designate Cool Crest a historically significant site. The following year, the city’s Zoning Commission and City Council unanimously approved the re-zoning of the golf course as a historically significant property.

Cool Crest has seen literally hundreds of thousands of miniature golf enthusiasts play through its two professionally-designed 18-hole golf courses over its rich history of more than eighty years. For putt-putt golfers who love a good sporting challenge, or the nostalgic romantic reminiscing about taking that special person there on a first date, or grown-ups who fondly remember spending many a fun-filled moment on the courses as kids, there truly is no place on earth quite like Cool Crest Miniature Golf Course.

First time mini golfing it was so much fun. Very cheap to play great courses. The staff makes you feel right at home and very knowledgeable. Great for a date, bday party, or company picnic.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitPrice for adult entry$11–15
YOU NEED TO VISIT THIS PLACE!!! My family had so much fun playing mini-golf and listening to some great live music with the Jaime Varela Band! Didn't hurt that I could enjoy a victory beer after a warm night and 18 holes of fun in the newly added Metzger Bier Garten - great draft and bottle selection! After our first time here, it's easy to see how this place has been around since 1929. It's good old-fashioned fun on an impeccably well maintained course two courses w different difficulties surrounded by beautiful flowers and landscaping. No cheesy windmills or funny faces to hit into, just challenging slopes and well placed traps to keep you on your toes! My kids are already talking about how we need to make this a monthly routine. We'll definitely be back!
Unique San Antonio staple! Music on the weekends in the biergarten with no cover. Great craft draft selection.Visited onWeekday

What a fun date night! We had a great time, and Mario at the front counter was so friendly and welcoming. The beer garden was a relaxing end to the night. Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$11–15
As far as mini-golf goes, this was a fun place overall. Definitely shows it's age as one of if not the oldest in San Antonio. But it is a reasonably well maintained course. The plants throughout the course were nice but they needed a little more watering we visited in early August, and they may be greener during cooler times of the year.
The area seems a little sketch, but honestly, this place was awesome. The "easy" golf course was still a good challenge, and they have a beer garden in the back. We went on a Saturday evening and they had live music! Don't drive away before you play! Was definitely worth the $11/person to play.
We visited this establishment for the first time last night and it was so much fun!!! The challenging course was super fun. The sushi was delicious. Mario at the bar is very welcoming and friendly. The employees were all very attentive and friendly. There was an all women Cumbia band and dancing because there is a dance floor and a stage that adds a nice touch to the whole atmosphere. We will definitely be visiting this place again.
The harder course is not messing around! Thoroughly enjoyed the complexity of the courses given how little space the place has. Really unique courses. It was pretty busy so the courses took a while to get through
You have an option to take an easier course 1929 or a little more challenging course 1959. We chose the easier since we had pur 3year old. It was still fun and challenging enough to play on for us adults but not too hard for our son. He even scored a hole in one while it took us like 3-4 hits haha! Fun for all ages, good amount of time spent, and inexpensive.
