The Cornell Aquaculture Program provides resources for farmers, both in New York State and worldwide, to design and maintain successful aquaculture operations.
Aquaculture is the farming and husbandry of aquatic animals and plants. Production methods range from extensive pond culture to intensive recirculating systems. In New York and elsewhere, Aquaculture has attracted the attention of farmers, landowners, and investors as an alternative agriculture enterprise. Like other forms of farming, Aquaculture involves capital investment, labor, management, and risk.
The Cornell Aquaculture Program, headed by Dr. Mike Timmons in the Department of Biological & Environmental Engineering, has two goals:
1. To conduct research to strengthen the sustainability, efficiency, and economic viability of aquaculture.
2. To provide outreach and extension resources for farmers worldwide, from start-up operations to fully-developed systems.
